NEW YORK (CNN) -- The Democratic Party has long maintained a near monopoly on the African-American vote, a claim Republicans hope to tackle by putting on a new face this week in New York.
The GOP hails its 2004 delegate pool as its most diverse ever. Minorities make up 796 of the party's 4,853 delegates and alternates -- 16.4 percent overall, a major jump from 10 percent such representation in 2000 and 6.3 percent four years prior. The figure includes 290 African-Americans, as well as 297 Hispanics and 209 other minorities.

Good stuff...making progress slowly but surely.
I miss him too. His pffice used to call me and ask about what I wanted to see from the GOP. And i wasn't even one of his constituents.
A week ago I was deeply, deeply hurt. I saw Watts on an infomercial.
I so agree with that.
My wife is Latin American and loves GW! She sees real progress in the Hispanic community for the conservative cause. For some reason, they respond better to the platform than African American Democrats.
IMO, Diversity in the GOP is not seen in the crowd, but on the Podium and in the Presidential Cabinet.
I agree
It is so sad that I have actually heard business associates who are black refer to Rice and Powell as traitors!
I was talking up the RNC convention today at work when a co-worker came up to me and said "But how many black people did you see in the audience?". I told him actually I saw several, but what did that have to do with right and wrong? He went on to berate the Republicans as racist, excluders, etc etc. It's really sad that while great people are making great speeches and getting optimistic about our future, some in America are simply counting the black faces in the crowd to choose their party. And BTW, my co-worker does not consider Powell and Rice to be black, he scowled at the mention of their names.
He went on to berate the Republicans as racist, excluders, etc etc. <<<
Further to this, Democrats seem to view the diverse opinions within the RNC to be a BAD thing. They are mad because Republicans do not seem to be "towing the Republican line" as the DEMOCRATS see the Republican line!
Another critisism deals with how Republicans are running their convention, I'm sick of "I didn't HEAR them say "compassion" ONE TIME, they (Repubs)are "supposed" to be talking about compassion.
Democrats want us to run OUR convention THEIR way. To them, it boils down to "where are the hand-outs", "where is the appeasment".
Someone else on FR can certainly put this in shorter words, but maybe I got my point across?
