I heard somewhere that they wanted to formally nominate the President early in case something happened to stop the convention. I pray nothing happens at the convention.
On the other hand -- if the lamestream media is showing these protestors getting down and dirty, I think it can only help us. I seriously doubt the country will back ANY ONE or ANY PARTY that is reverting to the cr@p that went on in the 60s and 70s.
