A protest outside the convention hall at Madison Square Garden got rough Monday night. Eyewitness News' Jim Dolan has more on what happened and why.
They came here, a couple of thousand strong, to protest GOP policies. It started at the United Nations and ended on Eighth avenue. It was quiet for the most part, until the marchers wanted to go past the garden and the convention, and the police couldn't let that happen. The protestors were stopped at 30th Street and one block south of that the trouble started.
A plain clothes policeman was kicked and beaten by protestors. But there were hundreds of uniformed police officers who moved in quickly and in force to make arrests and get the police officer out to safety and calm things down.
It didn't end there, though. There were other scuffles at 30th Street when marchers were denied access to roads leading past the garden. No one knew exactly what they were hoping to get from the police.
Officer: "What do you want to do?" Protestor: "I don't know where I want to go."
Most of the protest was peaceful. It was a march that started at the United Nations, protesting GOP policies that protestors say affect the nation's poor. It ended in a sit down on Eighth Avenue just a couple of blocks from the garden.
Jim Dolan: "What do you really hope happens out there?" Protestor: "I don't really know. I don't think we can stop the convention. But I think it is great so many people are getting together to express outrage at this.. regime."
We still don't have a final number of arrests. But there were definitely some in the crowd who knew how to diffuse tension. Just as things started to heat up, some in the crowd started chanting, "The police deserve a pay raise, the police deserve a pay raise.." More people joined in, and pretty soon things started to quiet down. I'm pretty sure no one from that group got arrested.
wait until Thursday. There is apparently a plan by the NOT IN OUR NAME crowd (a front for the Revolutionary Communist Party) to cause a violent clash with police.
They're all smelly Commie pinko left wing hippies, nothing more.
we might see molotov cocktails, but that will because its been planned for weeks if it happens.
I went to see the video, they have cut this video. When you click play, it shows you an add and then it says The End in the upper left hand edge of the screen.
I tried lots of times. even closed the browser and retried it. Tried to hack the link and download the video to desktop, same result.
see #21
Ah yes. Kerry/Edwards must be proud of this scum. It must bring back fond memories for Kerry. Memories that are seared...seared into him! Pray for the police and pray that if necessary their aim is true.
hmm, works for me. Link in #21 goes to it directly. Give it a whirl
Yeah, I saw that! What a vicious HAG she is!
She knew she'd be arrested for being a Mass Weapon of Destruction if she disrobed any further.
"...protesting GOP policies that protestors say affect the nation's poor..."
This is why we need to keep a Republican in the WH. It's the only time the lefties think of the nation's poor!
The article said they got the guy that kicked the policeman. I sure hope they did!
WABC TV has slides of the attack
They're expecting confrontations tomorrow too.
Yes, I know...and for the life of me I can't get them to load all the way!
The vermin protesters are just rehearsing now. The demonstrations and violence will reach a crescendo Thursday night during President Bush's acceptance speech. They'll do anything to overshadow the president and, by Thursday, the vermin will be whipped into a frenzy. They sorely hope for a repeat of the 1968 Democrat Convention riots.
Yup.. got it... thanks both of you... :)
The protest today were non-existent until about 6-7PM. I couldn't find a single protestor the entire day. I looked all over Manhattan and they were AWOL. What a bunch of p*ssies. The only people on the street were the ProtestWarriors. Got some great pictures. Sunday afternoon was the only real protest so far, the rest is stragglers and leftovers. But it is quite funny how Demo this how town is. I surveyed at least 40 people in restaurants and on the street and not a single one said that they were voting for W. Although I'm pretty sure that most of the uniformed officers would (not the traffic grunts, but the armed officers).
Kicking a plain-clothes cop. Yeah, that'll go over well with Real America.
