Baby Burners (Parents bringing the kids to Burning Man desert bacchanal)
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/30/04 | Janine DeFeo

Burning Man, infamous for its drug-fueled debauchery in the wind- whipped Nevada desert, may seem like the last place to haul the kids for a family vacation.

But the annual experiment in radical self-expression, communal living and massive interactive art is becoming something of a counterculture Disneyland as increasing numbers of Burners from the Bay Area and beyond are bringing their young ones to Black Rock City.

To the uninitiated, a dry lakebed in the middle of nowhere -- plagued by dust storms and extreme temperatures and inhabited by no small number of naked people -- sounds like no place for children.

But devotees of Burning Man, which starts today and culminates Saturday night with the torching of the eponymous man atop a geodesic dome, say there really is no better spot for kids to learn about living and working together in an environment where they can be totally free...

I don't know anything about this Burning Man place except for what the article describes but it may not be that much worse than watching the Disney Channel. At these high dry flats the kids see some weirdos and some nudity but on the Channel they are TAUGHT that they are smarter than their parents and that coolness rules. I think I would rather my children see an occassional hippie or hippiette sans clothing than be exposed to almost daily subtle and effective brain washing by the Disney zip wads.

Think of the Disney Channel as way to open the mind to:

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

Michael Moore will be a burning man as soon as he chokes on that ham sandwich.

amen to that...there are no responsible people at Burning Man.. the place is rife with drugs, alcohol, and sex, all consumed with no regard to safety or respect of one's fellow man.. people thought the Manson family were just a bunch of "peaceful hippies" too.

Not from what I have heard from others who have been there. I'll let you know Monday how it was. I don't know about drugs (although we have brought a variety of cold remedies and such) but most celebratory gatherings of adults include some alcohol and sex. Look at any tropical resort, or big-city hotel. I presume the sex will be behind closed tent-flaps at the festival, but the alcohol may be openly consumed, as it has for millennia.

I have friends who go every year.. you might as well be saying.. well I was at woodstock but I never personally saw anyone taking any drugs..please... you can't compare this to a hotel or resort.. I can take my kids on vacation at any normal place and not be worried about what they might be exposed to. Burning man is a gathering place for socialists, pagans, and other freaks.

I'll let you know first hand. If some small minority of people take drugs, or are underdressed, that doesn't make us all "socialists, pagans, or other freaks."

(Not that anyone should take their kids to the event.)
