threatening website taken down by secret service
The horse's mouth | 8/30/04 | vanity

Posted on 08/30/2004 2:01:48 PM PDT by hershey

I saw a young man I know casually at a party the other night, and he said his website had been shut down by the Secret Service. He laughed when I asked why...and then told me the name of the website. I just about fainted dead away. The young man, let's call him Phil, acted as if it were a big joke. He said they'd come to his home, taken him away, confiscated his computer, etc.. Finally, after questioning him and telling him how stupid he'd been, they let him go.

Phil is very clever, smart, and I thought, responsible. He's in college, runs his own computer repair business, plus works fulltime. But he comes from a chaotic family, has problems with authority figures, namely his mother. A smart aleck looking for attention. But the last person you'd think was stupid enough to pull a stunt like this. They have a file on him now, if he wants a govt. job or security clearance, he might not get it.

Nothing can excuse what he's done...after 9/11, after being at war for several years now...why would he do this? He's a little more unwired than I thought. But if at some point in the future, he gets mad at someone, he's clever and nimble-fingered enough to put together explosive devices that could kill. Frightening thought, but true. So why did he pull this stunt with the website? Angry, and wanted attention, which he got in spades.

This reminds me of Ann Rule, the True Crime author, who worked as a volunteer at a Samaritan Center, manning phone lines late at night with another volunteer. A young man who'd walk her to her car in the parking lot at one am so she wouldn't be afraid. That young man turned out to be Ted Bundy...and her account of their acquaintanceship and his crimes started her off as a best selling author.

When you think you know the people around you, you don't know their secrets and what they're truly capable of. I'd never trust Phil again, not ever.

I can smile, now, thank you, but when I heard what Phil had done, my heart stopped.

The article doesn't say what the name of the web site was. I can imagine, and if posting it would be... counter productive... then don't, but it is a bit frustrating.

Nice. Once I saw where I was being redirected to, I promptly closed the window. No need for *that* cookie to be on my computer.

And it is with a huge sense of caution that I also tell you I have known two FReepers who are/were also "different."

One, I would have trusted with my very life - turned out to be a lying criminal. Another one, probably a psycho.

Thank God 99% of FReepers are great people and I only bring this up as a reminder not to trust someone just because they share your political beliefs.

And NO. No matter how anyone begs, I will NOT divulge names. ;-)

It's a start. Maybe they'll get to shutting down LP, LF and FU, too.

If they shut it down and confiscated his computer, how is there a working link?

I clicked on your link.
How dumb is that guy, really? What an odd thing for him to do. I don't blame the Feds. There's enough liberal terrorists (ELF, ALF, Al Quata...) out there already for the Feds to keep an eye on.

Oh my God. It is hard to believe anyone would even do such a thing as a joke. The young man has no idea what he is saying. BTW Secret Service has the power to just put you away if they even think you are a threat. I fully agree.

Phil's bout of "information compulsion" was a lucky break for you. Now you can, given a bit of luck, back off from him without recriminations. People like this joker are the tarbabys of life and the tar they ooze is failure at best, catastrophe at worst. Give them a wide berth and when one reveals himself, mistakenly or otherwise, don't waste any time cutting them loose. Lots of people of my generation, people who deserved much better, are "living the loser lifestyle" today because they fell under the spell of a charismatic Sixties' style radical who dragged their lives through a mudpit. Paradoxically, the leader in these affairs sometimes emerged scotfree, shrugged off the "losers", and went on to a more successful life and bigger game. I'm not advising anyone to be 100% cynical in evaluating friends and acquaintances. Nothing can hurt you worse than a bad friendship. A very healthy dose of caution is a very valuable life-skill.

I'm at work. I don't dare click on this site.

Where do you get re-directed to?

The Secret Service's web site?
