Tehran, Iran, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Iranian security chief Hassan Rohani Monday criticized Muslim extremist groups operating in Iraq, saying they hurt the interests of Muslim countries.
The Iranian News Agency, IRNA, quoted the head of the Higher Council for National Security in Iraq as saying such organizations as al-Qaida and Ansar al-Islam have been engaged in terrorist activities which are harming the national interests of both Iraq and Iran.
Terrorism undermines the region's security and we need to cooperate to combat that evil," Rohani said after a meeting with visiting Iraqi Deputy Prime Pinister Barham Saleh.
On his part, Saleh said "security cooperation between Iran and Iraq is of special importance," stressing that "Iraq will not serve as the source for any terrorist action or threat against Iran."
Saleh also called on Iraq's neighbors to help the Iraqi government combat terrorism and demanded an international conference to discuss the crisis in Iraq and find solutions for it.

Well this is encouraging!
Hardly. Arafat put on a diplomatic face when the heat was on him, too. Hell, he ended up at the White House. Until Iran starts handing over resident Al Qaeda, stops funding Hezbollah, and agrees to dismantle their nuclear program, they're just as dangerous and evil as yesterday.
It's my understanding that Al Sistani won a major battle this past week as well. It was a quiet battle but it was dangerous and Sistani won.
The longer the security battle rages, the longer we will remain in Iraq.
Bump!
Translation: We are Sh%tt%n kittens over here thanks to you terrorist guys. American planes are flying over, there is an increasing sense that we are next, and you guys are not helping matters. I do NOT want a JDAM launched through my window, or a Marine sniper sending me a hello present. So will you guys STOP!! Pretty please with sugar on it?
So, our jets did fly in to Iran air space!
This explains why Iran met with Iraq officials over the week-end. They are scared s-less.
Also explains why Edwards did the "Us, too" when stating they would deal with Iran forcefully. Seems John "One Term Senator" Edwards reads news and knows when it's safe to respond.
snicker snicker
In Iran, "turban Renewal" is at hand..
Remember that Sistani is an Iranian cleric! And he often plays as a British factor there.
Yeah, buy Arafart does NOT have the weight of theUS military beginning to shift in his direction. True, he has Israel to deal with, but the US Armed Forces is a whole different matter. We possess the ability to destroy an entire enemy regime in a matter of weeks. Israel can do that to Palestine, but politics ensures that they done.
The US is the 900 pound gorilla in the world at the moment. While we must use that power wisely, Iran knows full well, by way of Afghanastan and Iraq, that we can and will use if if they don't settle down. I still think there will be alot of face saving, defiant comments from Iran as we see with North Korea, but Iraq has no true super-power ally to fall back on for support. North Korea at least has China to prop them up.
Iran surely must understand that their between a rock and a very angry 900# gorilla...you can only hide behind the rock for so long...
"but politics ensures that they done." = typo
should read - ...but politics ensures that they don't.
Could this just be Taquiya (sp?), the patina subterfuge, for their real agenda and these ongoing machinations? Remember that convoy of trucks late last winter/early spring that entered Iraq from Iran carrying bio/chem tipped missles among other weapons! There also have been many reports of thousands crossing over from Iran after we took control. I think Tom Clancy laid out the real agenda of Iran in one of his books...to take over Iraq (and join with the rest of islam to their east either overtly or covertly) and form a major power. Until the axis of evil is defanged our work over there isn't done.

Bingo! Exactly my take on it, as discussed with LibreOuMort yesterday...
Very interesting analysis of what went on.
"And the polls are showing our good friend Kerry sinking like a rock. If Bush wins, he doesn't have to worry about being PC in a second and final term as President - First Afghanistan, second Iraq, we're next!"
The Mullah's must be getting nervous. Trying to rattle their rusty sabre hasn't worked, better play nice.
I wonder if this means they'll stop funding Hezzbollah and other radical shiite groups?
George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent
Once their nukes are ready they believe they will be able to offer enough deterrence to aggressively pursue their strategic goals in the region. But for now, its better to take the diplomatic approach and stall.
