In any event, it took a remarkable amount of courage for John Kerry, and others like him, to take an active public stand against the war they had just helped fight.
They knew that in a pro-war culture they would be looked down upon as traitors. They knew they'd be linked with Jane Fonda and the myths surrounding her anti-war efforts.
The Vietnam vets who despise Kerry do so because he has helped rob them of the glory they feel they deserve. Most of them, like most of the WWII vets, were dragged into battle through the Selective Service System. They were drafted. They didn't want to be in a war. But once there they did what was expected of them, which was no more nor less than the WWII vets did.
They crave the same respect.
Does John Kerry still have the courage he exhibited after returning from Vietnam? If he does, and if he's elected, our troops will be out of Iraq by next February.
Courageous or not, Kerry is a peace-loving American's only hope. The incumbent president (Mr. Bring It On) has signaled he'll be sending others off to fight for as long as he holds the office.

What COLOR is the SKY in your WORLD?
THINK ABOUT THIS, S.F. Gate writer. Stop with the melodrama and read this:
They should have been worried about being charged as war criminals, after admitting to being war criminals and commiting numerous war crimes. If they were honest in their words, and as noble as we are lead to believe, then the last thing on their minds should have been about being called 'traitors'. If they had provided proof, genuinely turned themselves in to be tried for war crimes, then that would have been a major event, but it wouldn't be treason.
Any concerns about being called traitors would not be valid until after it became apparent that they were lying. Once it became apparent that none of them meant what they said, but only said it to affect the political direction of the country at the expense of the honor and good name of our servicemen, then, and only then, would 'treason' be an issue.
So, to admit that they should fear being called traitors is to admit that they were lying about the war crimes.
If you are lying, then it's not courageous!!!!!
Fine, I'll bite.
What do you want to argue first, Viet Nam or the lack of civility in politics?
Oh, please. Kerry fit right in with the hippie culture.
This account is banned or suspended. That didn't take long...
Gee whiz, rikster - you sure didn't last long, did you?
No, Kerry was one of the major reasons the war was as prolonged as it was, particularly for POWs who were subjected to the sight, sound, and words of a seditious Kerry, who waited until he was safe at home to do any criticizing.
I would venture that Kerry's "testimony" was "seared, seared" into their memories, particularly when reinforced with some VC "persuasion."
Kerry was also the main reason our servicemen were spat upon as "baby killers" by their fellow countrymen. Now they are spitting back, and unlike Kerry, they do so with the truth on their side.
Kerry is the one that deserves the disrespect, as he admitted to committing "war crimes and atrocities."
Kerry should just bow out gracefully and live off sugarmomma in seclusion.
John Kerry only "fought" for 4 months, and 1 month of that was training. And his "fighting" consisted of running from the enemy mostly. He was a true disgrace and had nothing but a political motive. A true lying scumbag. Unfit for Command is a great read, and i urge everyone to donate to the cause @ swiftvets.com
There is a difference in exercising free speech and giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Kerry met with the Vietnamese communists in Paris and returned to the US to advocate acceptance of their conditions. He branded all who served as war criminals and stated that is was official US policy to commit atrocities. He was a key member of VVAW and attended meetings where assassination of USG officials was discussed. Kerry went way beyond mere opposition to the war.
It took no courage to come back and speak out against the war. It was a cowardly action based on nothing more than political motives. Taking video and reenacting "combat" that he saw, WHAT A JOKE THIS GUY IS. I hope the majority of swing voters arent naive enough to vote for this clown.
If anyone is looking for more info on this author, you'll note that his last name is spelled "Sorensen," not "Sorenson."
"I'm John Kerry reporting for duty"
Some Naval officer should have said....GOOD, you still owe the Navy Reserve 243 days of active duty!
You real sure about that, comrade?
The "free speech" you mention was aiding and abetting the enemies of this country, which is treason, which used to be punishable by death from a firing squad.
The worst enemy John Fn Kerry fought was flying rice grains.
This country is divided because Conservatives are tired of the bullcrap people like you love to spout about a traitor that should have been hanged by his thumbs and filleted.
Stick around, scumbag. You've got a lot more coming....
Too late, that sucker's been dusted.
Yeah.. and if you read other past columns by Sorensen.. you'll be thinking him a certified pot-head. He may be...
