Anti - Bush Protestors Heckle Broadway Theatergoers

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dozens of demonstrators heckled and jeered Broadway theatergoers on Sunday, seeking confrontations with Republican delegates who arrived in New York City to back President Bush's reelection bid.

Police arrested up to 60 protesters who assembled in Times Square at dusk chanting anti-Bush slogans after hundreds of thousands had marched in Manhattan to decry the president's policies before the Republican convention begins on Monday.

But individual protesters kept tensions high, some of them hissing or cursing at well-heeled couples heading to popular Broadway musicals like ``Thoroughly Modern Millie'' and ``Fiddler on the Roof.''

``Republican murderers go home and kill your babies!'' one young man yelled at theatergoers, a far cry from local public service messages urging New Yorkers to ``make nice'' to party delegates in the city for the four-day convention, where Bush will be nominated for another four-year term.

A second protester shoved a middle-aged woman in a black cocktail dress, shouting:

``Bitch, go home! We don't want you here!'' At one point, police cordoned off a city block after several dozen demonstrators jeered and razzed the incoming audience.

``We were talking to delegates as they came by. We were very calm,'' said Brendan, 23, an organic farmer from upstate New York, adding he was thumbing his nose at the crowd with other hecklers before police intervened. ``You do anything a little out of the ordinary here and they arrest you.''

Protest actions in front of New York theaters were some of the few taking place outside permitted demonstration areas.

The wild card in protests expected later this week is whether self-styled anarchists try to wreak havoc in the city with unannounced actions despite unprecedented security.

Since when are what these protesters doing in the Big Apple considered just "a little out of the ordinary?" Welcome to New York.

Try that on me or mine and they'll loose a hand.

"Bitch, go home! We don't want you here!"

How nice and tolerant of them! They want inclusion for everyone except those who don't look or act or think or speak or vote like them.

For the life of me, I don't understand why the Republican Party would hold its convention in such a hostile place. NYers seem anxious to accept Republican money, while spitting on Republicans.

Hey, any word on how many of the great artistes of the theater took a "sick day" as a matter of protest? I would like names.

I hope they keep them locked up until after the convention.

Actually, I disagree. I think the GOP was so smart to have their convention in NYC -- for exactly what happened today.

``Republican murderers go home and kill your babies!''

As far as I know, it's the Demo-Communists that do the baby killing. They call it "Choice".

Those silly childish fools. Well, I hope these wild eye lunies get alot of camera time. When Mom & Pop America see who opposes GWB, they will be more likely to vote for him.

What Brendan, 23, doesn't understand is that he and his ilk are revenue-killers and revenue-sappers for the city, whereas the 'well-healed' Republican delegates are bringing money into the city. The cops have a good reason to slap down the protestors. Their jobs depend on the financial support of the delegates. Their jobs are made harder because of the problems the protestors are making.

Protesting a political candidate is one thing, but, assaulting citizens (verbal, physical, mob) is not protesting. Its criminal! Smooth move Rats. MSM is drawn to confrontations like flies to honey(rats to cheese). A few more times like that and whats left of JFKs Juggernaut will become a modern day Maginot Line.

Actually I think it was a master stroke holding the convention in NYC. W gets to invoke 9/11; the looney left (both DemonRATs and the more absurd minor party and anti-globalization types) think they're on friendly territory and will behave more outrageously than the would have if the convention were held in, say Atlanta, thereby making Bush-hatred look ridiculous in the eyes of undecided voters and if they're bad enough, New York might tilt enough away from Kerry that he's obliged to spend some money defending it.

Where's the outcry from the media and John McCain asking Kerry to condemn these protesters? I'm so tired of these double standards and all of this bashing of a good man. I think the Clinton years made people forget what a "good man" really is.
