Swift barrage is fine with Laura

BY CELESTE KATZ DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Laura Bush

First Lady Laura Bush doesn't have a problem with the controversial attack ads that claim John Kerry lied about his medals in Vietnam. "Do I think they're unfair? Not really," she told Time magazine this week. "There have been millions of terrible ads against my husband."

The ads, aired by an anti-Kerry group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, have dominated the campaign in recent weeks.

Kerry has denounced them as a smear and Sen. John McCain has asked President Bush to condemn them.

Even the President has said he does not believe Kerry lied about his service and yesterday he praised Kerry's actions on NBC's "Today" show.

"I think him going to Vietnam was more heroic than my flying fighter jets. He was in harm's way and I wasn't," said Bush, who joined the Texas Air National Guard during the war.

The First Lady, however, was unmoved by Kerry's complaint and was more upset by ads that criticize her husband.

"I think they're all very unfair. I really do," she said with a laugh.

In her interview with Time, Mrs. Bush dodged when asked if she supported her husband's proposal for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

"People want to be able to talk about it - and come to terms with it, if that's what people decide," she said. The proposed amendment "opens the debate up."

When pressed if she had an "open mind" on the issue, she answered simply, "Sure."

Vice President Cheney, who has a lesbian daughter, broke with the President on that issue last week.

When asked if she and her husband ever had a gay couple stay in their house, Mrs. Bush replied, "I'm sure we have."

Clearly there is strategy going on here with first Jeb and then Mrs. G.W. Bush coming out and saying these guys have a right to express their opinion, while President G.W. Bush says all these ads are wrong. With Jeb, I wondered if his was a trial balloon or just his own view. With Jeb and the First Lady out there, this is strategy for sure. And a nice one to keep the president above the fray.

Good for her, believe me their not going to trip her up, she's too elegant and America loves her, can't say that about the other one.

At some point George W. Bush might call a press conference and do a flip-flop apology for the media and come out and say something like, "I honestly believed that John F. Kerry was an honorable man and hero, but now I am forced to conclude that I was wrong. I'm shocked and deeply saddened. I apologize."

I was wondering about this myself. When it becomes so clear to everyone that Kerry is a lying wannabe self-promoter, President Bush might be forced to apologize and admit that he was wrong about the guy!! It would be pretty hard to come down on him for standing up like a man and admitting his mistake!
