After weeks of denigration of the Democratic challenger's Vietnam war record, Mr Kerry's backers have responded with allegations against the President - including the claim that he was once photographed in uniform wearing a medal ribbon he had not earned.
As polls showed that Mr Bush had edged ahead of Mr Kerry for the first time, a pro-Kerry organisation labelled the President an "impostor" over the photograph, taken in 1970 and discovered in his father's Presidential Library in Houston, Texas.
The ribbon is an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award - which was not awarded to the 111th Fighter Intercept Squadron in which Mr Bush served until 1975, five years after the photograph was taken, according to the group US War Report.
"Why is this fraud important? Because it betrays the Honour Code that every officer learns and carries throughout his or her career," said Walt Starr who investigated the medals for the group. Separately a new book, Deserter, by Ian Williams, a British-born author, challenges the President with details of how he used his father's influence to join the Texas Air National Guard as a trainee pilot, thereby avoiding service in Vietnam, and then allegedly disappeared from his base without fulfilling his duty.
"Bush has set himself up, and now that the issue is coming up he is going to have to answer questions on his own documented record," said Williams.

Hey FReepers! I'm new to this particular item. Can someone please tell me what the scoop is here? Thanks!
Damn, this is so incredibly lame. If this is the best the Kerry people can come up with they must be sucking wind something awful. If they don't understand the difference between a unit citation and a personal citation it just shows they are completely out of touch with the military culture.
On the other hand, they keep the discussion alive!!!!!! So, keep it up.
This story has already been debunked 3 days ago, along with the former Lt. Gov who claims he regrets pulling strings in order to make it possible for GWB getting into the Texas ANG, problem is he wasn't the Lt. Gov until a year after GWB entered the Texas ANG
Would this count as "fear and smear?"
DRIP DRIP DRIP this is the second leak in two days, looks like the Kerry camp is expending their ammo this week.
Why that's nothing.
John Kerry made movies in Viet Nam that showed his men pouring gasoline on a village and torching it.
Which is just what the SBVFT said in the book.
John Kerry happily showed this movie to a Boston Globe reporter in 1996, who wrote about it for the paper.
Kerry also showed the reporter scenes where he was sunbathing in cutoff shorts, while next to a bound and blindfolded Viet Cong prisoner.
Bob Dornan said on H and C last night that he has a movie or pictures of Kerry watching happily as anti war slugs burned an American flag.
Drip,drip,drip
The stupid 'rats just can't resist picking at this scab, and keeping the story alive.
The more folks know about Bush's F-102 figher days, the more they will respect him for it. About 900 were built, 260 crashed, killing about 70 pilots. They were several times more dangerous (based on hours per accident) than today's jet fighters.
These papers are going look like fools for getting thier information from the DU
It's downhill from here for them. John Kerry has been exposed as the fraud he is, just like the "Bush Lied" crowd has been. The wheels are coming off the Kerry/Edwards campaign
That has never stopped them before :-)
There is something pungently putrid about "EFnK" invoking the idea of "honor."
Is it just me or does EFnK sound like a child?
Bush, or course, is now rewarded for his anti-1st Amendment [and appeasement] stance blasting the swiftees in allegiance to Kerry.
[Dear Mr President; It works the same way with islamonazis...they'll stab you in the back]
All these attacks on the Swift Boat Vets and the recent attempts to bring up President Bush's service in the Texas ANG by the Kerry Campaign and his "Dirt Devild" is simply deflection and nobody is falling for it :-)
Devild = Devils
I feel the same way. At this point, every day the Swift Vet story is in play Kerry probably loses a quarter-point or more in the polls, so keep on keepin' on Dems!
Bush got this for his service in the Ellington AFB and the 147th FIG/ 111th FIS.
The 147th earned its first Air Force Outstanding Unit Award in 1966 when it was proclaimed, "The most combat ready of all Air Guard units."

How friggin' low can they go? That is despicable.
Did anyone e-mail this to the author of the story?
