This is not exactly a debunking, but... During the Gulf War I was still working on my Crew Chief certification, so despite the fact that I'd volunteered for deployment, they left my butt in Michigan. Later, my wing received the Presidential Outstanding Unit Citation. Since I had not deployed, and since the unit that earned it was the provisional wing built around our deployed birds, I didn't wear it at first. One of my sergeants noticed it when I was in my blues and informed me that any Airman Basic arriving on the base could wear the thing, so I should.

The award is for the unit, not the man. It's that simple.

Campbell and in the 101st Abn, I wore the Presidential Unit citation that had been awarded to the 506th PIR...you know, those of the "Band of Brothers" fame...it was issued by the supply NCO, wore it for 5 years, then took it off and left for a new unit...
