Kerry citation a 'total mystery' to ex-Navy chief
August 28, 2004
BY THOMAS LIPSCOMB
Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has no idea where a Silver Star citation displayed on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign Web site came from, he said Friday. The citation appears over Lehman's signature.
"It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he said.
The additional language varied from the two previous citations, signed first by Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and then Adm. John Hyland, which themselves differ. The new material added in the Lehman citation reads in part: "By his brave actions, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Lieutenant (jg) Kerry reflected great credit upon himself...."
Asked how the citation could have been executed over his signature without his knowledge, Lehman said: "I have no idea. I can only imagine they were signed by an autopen." The autopen is a device often used in the routine execution of executive documents in government.
Kerry senior adviser Michael Meehan could not be reached for comment on Kerry's records.

Separated 17/2/72, if I recall correctly from his DD214. Go to the KerryEdwards site. It's there.
Thanks. It is
there in pdf format, and he was separated 17 Feb 1972.
Kerry met with the VC and DRVN in Paris in 1971 and appeared before the Fulbright committee in 1971. He was still USN then.

I seem to recall that he was "Navy Reserve, Inactive" between 1970 and 1972. Then went active in Reserves and was discharged in '78. It's been a while since I looked at the documents, though.
(Chieftain, can you answer this question?)

What is the difference between "separated in 1970" and "honorably discharged in 1978"? What does that mean?

McCain said "dishonorable"; Bush
never even came close to slurring
the Vets personally, just doesn't
like ALL 527s.
He did say he thinks Kerry served
"honorably". That is minimum for
him to comment in his role as the
President, about a Senator and
opponent. The least he could say.
Kerry's records say "honorable";
that's all Bush knows for sure.
If Kerry is NAILED by O'Neill,
the Media etc, where dishonor by
Kerry is proven, he will react in
good time.
Note, nobody has asked him about
Kerry's testimony, pro-enemy acts,
etc. I think he may well use 'em.

In another five years, the entire country will be wired. I don't understand what that means.

Bzzzt. Thanks for playing. Unlike HS diplomas, award citations aren't "fill in the blank". The highest award I have is the Navy Achievement Medal. I got five such awards during my thirteen years, and every single citation is different.

Here's a
Kerry Timeline which includes the military records. I haven't checked its accuracy, but it looks pretty thorough.

(Don't let the press spin you. Keep your eye on the ball. Get Kerry to sign the 180.)

The
DD214 on the johnkerry.com site (pdf format) states he was separated 'continuing on active duty as Ensign, USNR' on the first page, and on the second page 'released from active duty and transfered to Naval Reserve'.
It's been 30+ years since I looked at a DD214. Is there an inconsistency between what's on page one and what's on page two?

Read on, I've "been corrected," and this thread has lenty of good dialogue on the subject.

And they are not used on Silver Star citations -- I called and checked with someone who used to be an Exec to the AF Chief of Staff. So if Lehman didn't sign it, and it shouldn't have been autopenned....
Oh, boy...

Oh yes! ...and I didn't even think of that! :-)

VERY interesting.
I've always wondered how POS Kerry got 3 different versions of his Silver Star Citation...since it is customary to AMEND the original..NOT replace it.

You're right regarding Mr. Bush and "dishonorable" - it was McCain and most recently Glenn. But joining McCain in threats of lawsuits, while it may be for political cover and to keep McCain on the reservation, smacks of agreement with him. My main point is that it risks keeping the demoralized from the polls. I don't think I'm wrong about this, but it's only a gut feeling.
To: mewzilla
Uhhhhh...the "V" does not appear
on any of the 3 differing Silver
Star Citations, so I read. BUT,
Kerry's website lists a "Silver
Star with V" in a listing of his
decorations. Ain't no such thing!

What is the difference between "separated in 1970" and "honorably discharged in 1978"? What does that mean?
Separation is a change in the member's active or reserve status. It is the more general term. A member is discharged when all avctive or reserve obligations are complete.
