Why the Swift Boat Campaign Worked
The Washington Dispatch ^ | August 27, 2004 | CK Rairden

While the debate rages on against free speech, one thing is certain — the 527 anti-Kerry group “Swift Boat Veteran for Truth” has succeeded in their campaign to cause voters to question John Kerry’s credibility. The reasons are fascinating and unconventional.

Here’s the Page 2 Politics “Not Quite Top Ten List” of why the campaign is already a success. (Sorry-no humor, just my opinion)

9) The SwiftVets come across in interviews as calm and credible, especially next to James Carville, Susan Estrich and Chris Mathews who repeatedly called them liars.

8) John Kerry’s lame and non-answers at the front of this campaign. And to this day, he’s still dodging the charges.

7) Old Media trying to hide the story at the front of the campaign caused a spike in interest.

6) John Kerry refusing to sign form 180 and release his records.

5) Once Old Media got involved they only attacked the SwiftVets while giving John Kerry a pass.

I disagree with the #1 reason. IMO the Swifties worked while the liberal 527s floundered for a simple reason - you have to repeat a lie over and over and over again for folks to believe it - and even then it's an iffy process. But the truth only needs to be told once.

Honor never goes out of style--although the Dems have abandoned it.

It worked because they tell the truth in a calm and dignified manner.

I liked the concluding paragraph:

"That begs a question: Was there a day somewhere in the month of August 2004 that will be remembered as the day that old media died?

... except, folks could tell by the smell that he got the year wrong!

can you imagine having president that can't tell his side of a major story?
Can you imagine having a president that sues his political oponets?
can you imagine having president that tells lies to embarrass our country?

The good news is this is the story for the next 70 days, there is nothing ketchup boy can do now, he will take all the dims down with him and W will win at least 40 states and plus 3 in the senate
swifties for saints!!!

Here's a number one for you:

John Kerry never defined himself as a candidate. If Kerry was out there staking out his ground as to his beliefs, his plans, his record, his abilities, his values, the Swiftees would have had to displace that. But all he offered was 'Hey, I was in Vietnam.' The Swiftees claims were direct refutations of that image, so it leaves nothing else to hang on to (other than the hair).

First of all, Kerry is a poor liar. He overly exaggerated his after action reports to the point where officers familiar with the action could spot them as fiction three decades later. There was nothing subtle in the way that he lied. Furthermore, he fabricated different versions of the same stories, making it impossible for him to keep track of his lies over these many years.

Second of all, Kerry not only is the one who chose to make his service the centerpiece of his campaign, he initiated a smear campaign early on when Gunner Gardner refused to join Kerry's "band of brothers." The Gunner resisted Kerry's arm-twisting approach: "If you're not with us, you're against us." And he was immediately slimed by Kerry, being called an undisplined wild man with a machine gun, randomly shooting up the jungle's riparian zones, among other things. You live by the smear, you die by the truth. Thank goodness Admiral Hoffman pulled these men together to rescue Gunner Gardner and shed light upon what a worm is Jean Fraude Kerri. Gunner Gardner is a true and courageous patriot. The founding of SBVT shows the US Navy officer corps at its best: looking out for their men and their country, rather than Kerry's approach of using his men to provide him cover. God bless the SBVT!

That's the key here. I am still trying to figure out how on January 1, Howard Dean could be the front runner and by January 31, Dean was in the dust and Kerry was unstoppable.

I thought that Dean was a formidable candidate (that's not to say that I would consider voting for him), but Kerry is not. Some political scientists decry our long primary season, but it does test the putative candidates. Their weaknesses are exposed (and hopefully their stregnths are highlighted) In this case, the Democrats are discovering that an effective primary season of less than one month (January, 2004) has left them with an completely unacceptable candidate.

The solution is obvious - the Democrats need to change how they select their presidential candidate. Let's see, they did that in 1976 (and won with Carter, much to the regret of the country), again in 1988 (and were destroyed), again in 1992 (much to the regret of the country), and again in 2004. Whenever they muck with their primaries, they only make their problems worse.

Good analysis. Yes, Kerry was not properly vetted in the primary. Will the dems learn? No. Will the pubs make the same mistake in the future? Probably.

Democrats are easily led and follow willy-nilly what the dem leaders through the MSM tell them the thought of the moment is. The democrats still mostly get their news from the MSM while Republicans have been forced to find more independent sources.

The MSM destroyed Dean and made Kerry, there was no thought to the process. The MSM just became scared of the electability of Dean and led the lemmings to Kerry.

We were having too much fun at Howie Noneck's expense, day after day, laugh after laugh and the RATs noticed. So Howie Noneck peaked too soon, believed his own publicity, got complacent and screamed himself into oblivion. Alas. Plus, Kerry got the missus to pony up for the Louisburg Sq. house second mortgage. Six mill and change. That kept him in the race while Howie folded.

Oh .. this one's easy. Dean made the mistake of saying, "as soon as I get the nomination, McAwful will be the first person I fire". Dean does not like McAwful at all. Of course .. Dean was made an offer he couldn't refuse.

The dems think we're stupid, but we know how the game is played. The Clintons are running things .. whether Dean likes it or not. Now .. after being promised Health and Human Services (I would suppose), Dean is playing ball to get his slice of the POWER!!

The Swift Boat Vets' campaign is a pure example of The Freedom of Speech and the right of citizens to participate in the political process. This is the American political system at its very best. The vets are simple citizens who disagree strongly with a candidate's statements and are exercising their God given rights to correct the record.
