Ain't ever going to happen. THe government is already using technology to track us all (if they so choose) using cameras and through the use of toll-paying devices.
If you could just fly away somewhere, that control is gone and the one-worlders aren't going to let that happen.
Where the hell is my tin-foil hat anyway?

Honestly, I think a helicopter would be rather more cost effective and safe.

Driving in TWO dimensions is tough enough for a lot of people. And there will be plenty of opportunity for tickets to be issued...

Nah. It would be survival of the fittest at its best. Anyone who can avoid oncoming flying soccer moms who are putting on their makeup and talking on the cell phone at the same time deserves to live.

It could be done, but the control system would cost more than social security and a power grid outage would kill everybody.

The sky is big. Airplanes don't collide except near airports, and automating approaches and takeoffs is a reasonably do-able problem. You're forgetting the poor victims on the ground.
Want to bet lunch? Check back in 100 years.
Meantime, your trust in technology reminds me of an old joke:
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first totally automated coast to coast flight. We have every conceivable safety feature, and quadruple redundant systems, so nothing can go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... "

Oh, yeah.
And imagine the expense of having to bury all the power lines and saw off all overhanging tree limbs in every subdivision so that George Jetson could have a long enough takeoff roll without snagging in the wires . . . and ground control (let alone air traffic control) . . . and weight and balance wrecks . . . and stall/spins . . .
Nah.

We should already have flying cars...but it's the FAA that will stand in the way.

Sci-fi movies with the lived-in look are best. That one was about a taxi driver wasn't it? Kind of a Flash Gordon ambience.

That's funny...my mom and dad always talked about their parents
finding a flying machine in the basement of a home they bought.
That's where I got my idea.

I collect old Popular Science/Mechanics mags, and could make a pretty thick book out of flying car ideas they've featured over the past 60 years that were "just around the corner."
