Gettysburg is an hour's drive or less from Philadelphia, Baltimore or Washington. Shiloh is in the middle of frickin' nowhere. (There is no SOMEWHERE in Mississippi!) Saaaayyy, you don't think that has something to do with it, do ya? I don't mean to be city-slicker to you: It's not a bad thing to be far from the maddening crowds, but it does have its way of keeping a place from being all tourist-trappy.
Chickamauga is in town and its nothing like Gettysburg. The battlefield at Franklin, TN has been severely encroached on by housing but at least its not a t-shirt hawking nightmare. Same for Chancellorsville. Cold Harbor and Gaines Mill are near Richmond and are appropriately quiet. I've been to a lot of battlefields beyond Shiloh...and Gettysburg is by far the most touristy and tacky.
The silver duct tape holding the carpet down in places in the visitors center was the best. Loved that.

Then stay home in your trailer park.
