Laura Bush turns it up
San Francisco Examiner ^ | 08-26-2004 | Siobhan McDonough

WASHINGTON- As Laura Bush tells it, she and her husband were pulling into the driveway one night when she turned to him and said the speech he had just given wasn't very good. He drove into the garage wall.

No wonder the future president went a little off course. These were words from an endlessly supportive wife, who had till then heeded advice from mother-in-law Barbara Bush never to criticize her husband's speeches. The family car-or at least the ranch pickup-has been safe ever since.

Sure, she let be known she didn’t care for his “dead or alive” ultimatum to Osama bin Laden. But first and foremost, this first lady is cheerleader to the president, and one who has used a louder megaphone this campaign than in the last to tell people what a great guy she and the country have landed.

In speaking so often of him, she has revealed little of herself.

“Very disciplined,” she calls herself. “I don’t really have to watch everything I say, because I’m pretty well-behaved as it is.”

In measured steps, Laura Bush has put a sharper edge on her campaigning this year. She’s traveling without her husband more often.

Moving beyond the contentious topics of literacy, heart disease and the increasing well-being of Afghan women, she pushed into the debate over stem cell research, in the process taking guarded but unmistakable shots at the opposition.

The First Lady is becoming a star in this campaign, and will bring class and civility wherever she goes.

She dedicated the new "Museum of the Underground Railroad" in Cincy earlier this week to rave reviews by local radio folks.

Never made the news, though.

It should have, but the major media won't show Republicans being racially inclusive.

Are they talking about the same speech? Bush was president when he gave the dead or alive speech so he could hardly pull into a driveway.

Let's see a debate of the first ladies. That would be a hoot.

I admire the Pres. for marrying her. I'd be afraid to marry a lady like that. I'm too much of a yutz.

#3..No, the first speech was soon after they married....
...he didn't win in that particular election, if I remember correctly.

The 'dead or alive'speech of course, was as President.

"Never made the news, though."

They just keep beating the drum here about whether or not poor P Diddy was dissed by Laura. I hate this town.

Well, she doesn't have a great track-record as a driver either. I know, I know ... flame away.

In all honesty, I think its such a refreshing change to have a woman like Laura keeping house at 1600.

First Lady debate? Good one.

Laura starts stating facts....

Mamma-T's head explodes.

Ah, wait. We can't do that. Don't you have to be a "Lady" first?

Ah, wait... Hillary.

Bah. Forget it.

The author doesn't make it clear if it is the same speech.

I believe the President still does drive on his ranch in Texas, although the SS probably discourages it anywhere else. This is most likely where the First Lady is refering to.

No, not the same speech. This is a very old interview. I saw it at least a year ago. The garage incident happened earlier in their marriage. Actually, it was quite funny the way she told it, so understated with her eyes smiling as she does. She was telling the interviewer why she tries not to criticize her husband.

Laura Bush is the best. I really liked her mother-in-law as First Lady, but Laura may be even better. She is pure class and we are well represented by her.

The difference between Laura Bush and Tereza Heinz-Kerry is like night and day. How soon do you think Tereza as first lady would say or do something that would embarrass us all? I very much hope that we NEVER find out!

Careful with that tag line...I'm a UC grad ('79) :>)

I live in the rural surroundings, so I don't gotta put up with the bull that you folks do.

P-diddy is as OReilly has painted him -- bad for youth. Should Laura have kissed him, or what? Is that the only thing that'll satisfy....embracing scum??

ROFL!...........After seeing that, 75% of American voters would be tempted to vote for Bush! Laura is a wonderful lady, a cool lady, and not to be too male, she has a really nice body.

Yes, it was about 15-20 years ago.

Laura Bush is a classy First Lady. She can be trusted on the campaign trail on her own. Now Teresa Kerry, is another matter. They wouldn't dare let her campaign on her own. Hell, they aren't letting her campaign with her hubby as of late.

The driving story is told in President Bush's words in the book A Charge To Keep. It was in the seventies.
