Politically charged Cho will go on

By REBECCA LOUIE

Yes, she's a raunchy comedian prone to jokes about S&M.
And yes, she finds the Bush administration heinous, to say the least.

But no, Margaret Cho would not necessarily mix the two and possibly harm John Kerry's run for President, and she wishes the Human Rights Campaign had believed that before disinviting her to headline their Democratic National Convention event.

"It's a little frustrating," says Cho, who, it was feared, would incite scandal like Whoopi Goldberg did when she made lewd Bush jokes at a Radio City fund-raiser for Kerry.

"I need to know that we are going to have a new administration, and I am 100% behind Kerry's agenda. The idea that I would not honor that mission is really sad. I don't hold anybody responsible, it's just unfortunate."

Instead, Cho will settle for saying her piece this Saturday, when she kicks off her "State of Emergency" tour at the Apollo Theater as Republicans begin arriving for their national convention.

Cho plans to traverse issues that have caused recent alarm, including Lynndie England, Martha Stewart and the GOP's treatment of lesbians and gays.

"They work overtime to ensure misery for gay and lesbian Americans," says Cho, who will air "Behind the Revolution," a documentary about her last tour, on the new gay and lesbian cable network, Logo.

"Gay marriages, for example, do not affect the daily life of people," she says. "I can't imagine drag queens breaking into their homes and stealing their wedding photographs and Champagne glasses.

"[Social conservatives] are constantly fighting against what they call 'Satan,' but the face of Satan is intolerance. Every time they process injustice, another demon gets its wings."

Next month, the outspoken artist will receive the Garden Party First Amendment Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

"Now more than ever this country needs activists like Margaret who are constantly pushing the envelope, who do not hesitate to express ideas even when they are considered controversial and unpopular," say Tenoch Flores, a spokesman for the ACLU.

Cho is also writing a book, due next year, about the year in politics. It includes a how-to guide to activism and social change. The 35-year-old has also just completed a CD/DVD rap album about health and nutrition.

Cho says she intends to get arrested sometime during the Republican convention.

"Maybe it will be for something totally unrelated, like shoplifting," says Cho, who promises she will wait until after her Saturday shows.

"Right now, I am just trying to figure out which precinct to do it near, figure out where the hottest, most fun cell to be in with other people will be."

I am 100% behind Kerry's agenda.

Which one? He's been on both side of every issue. Is she for the John Kerry that will escalate the war in Iraq? Is she for the John Kerry that opposes abortion and gay marriage? Is she for the John Kerry that drives 6 SUVs? Is she for the John Kerry that voted for the Patriot Act and No Child Left Behind?

If so, why doesn't she just vote for Bush?

I thought I was fighting liberals. Well I guess I am splitting hairs.

Phonetically, in mandarin 'cho' means 'stink'.

Exactly, I wish Cho would outline Kerry's agenda so we all would know.

When Margaret Cho did her normal monologue five years ago I loved her. I don't go to Robin Williams or Margaret Cho for politics; I go to them for entertainment.

On an internet mailing list I belong to we talk about common interests. Two years ago one of the members made a political point. I broadcast to the list that I don't know the political leaning of at least 80 percent of the members of the list; I come her to talk about (our common interest). I actually got an apology from the political member and some attaboys from other members. We haven't had a political discussion since.

To Maggie Cho and Robyn Williams and all the others (borrowing from Laura Ingraham)I say "shut up and joke!"

This story is extraordinary.

The economy is doing just fine; home ownership is at an all time high; interest rates are still at 40-year lows; we're kicking the crap out terrorists all over the world after lying down in front of them for years. Geez. What's the problem?

Poor Margaret. Sounds like she wishes it was still 1968 or 1972.

Looks like Drudge dug up a pic of a younger, cuter Cho. She's just a bitter thirty-something hag now; kind of a Chinese Janeane Garofalo.

Ann Coulter

put it succinctly:

Kerry was in Vietnam for only four months, which, coincidentally, is less than the combined airtime he's spent talking about it. It takes a special kind of person to get that many people to hate your guts in so little time. The last time this many people hated one person after only four months was when Margaret Cho had her own sitcom.
