It's for attaching night vision goggles.

579th Engineering Battalion - Is it unusual that the engineers are making raids - though they certainly look combat ready to rock and roll.

Thanks for clarifying that. Thought it might be possibly a mini-cam sending pics/action back to HQ units or field commanders. Good to see our folks have good equipment to supplement their training.
