I don't recall Barry Goldwater or William F. Buckley mentioning anything about abortion or gay rights while the conservative movement was being reassembled. This is the point and learn from it.
I'm not a Christian, it didn't take me the Bible or a preacher to tell me killing an infant before it's first breath of fresh air or first glimpse of light. It didn't take me the Bible to understand men have the stick ins and women have the stick intos.
American conservatism is based upon the Constitution. The men who created this great nation were men of faith but they were first men of ideas. It just cracks me up when I hear somebody say, "Well, that's not in the proper interpretation of the Constitution and follow it up with, "If you read Federalist Paper xx, you'll see this was the intention. Too bad! Had it been that important at the time, there would have been a comment or addenda, like the BILL OF RIGHTS !!!
It's like writing a song. You put the words down but the first singer who belts it out is going to be giving it their interpretation.
Until the religious conservatives understand the Republican Party is not their vehicle for instituting a Judea-Christian based legal and social system in America, they will be severely disappointed. They can sit out election after election and watch the situation disintegrate, that is their choice.
Until the economic conservatives understand a moral nation builds a foundation which allows the environment for the success of business and creation of wealth. They can push and shove and try to hide an important factor of this party and make it clear those of faith are not welcome in the light of day but socialism isn't very predisposed toward success.
Finally, the individual liberty conservatives have to consider situations are elastic. Sometimes personal rights need to be abridged in the name of security. A case in point is the evolution of civil rights in America. There has never been a point in time in CIVILIZED America where people have had more right to dissent and more people included in the political process than today.
That is the critical link between the 3 factions of the Republican Party, individual freedom and personal liberties. The right to worship as we choose or not to worship. The right to start and own your own business or to work for someone else. The right to dissent or fight for the rights of those in positions worse than ourselves, whether in bondage, in the womb or under the chains of tyranny.
And this is derived from the Creator.

Not for nothing, but I think business success has little, if anything, to do with morality or a just moral climate. In fact, I'd wager the opposite were true: the less hung up on morals a businessman is, the more money he can make.
