Republicans Not Voting for Britney Spears (Illinois Family Institute/GOP Convention Protest)
MSNBC ^ | 8/26/04 | Jeanette Walls

Some GOP'ers have a message for Britney Spears: Stay home.

The belly baring pop star is being courted to attend the Republican in New York next week, according to the Chicago Sun Times, and that has sparked outrage among some conservative groups.

'Through her immature antics, Ms. Spears has probably done more to undermine sexual morality than all of the misguided legislation introduced in the United States over the past decade,' the Illinois Family Institute wrote in an e-mail to members.

'It would be the height of hypocrisy for a party that claims to represent wholesome values to celebrate her.'

Citing Spears lesbian smooch with Madonna, her 'general immodesty,' and her annulled 56 hour marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas, the group is urging Republicans to call the GOP convention hotline to protest any appearance by Spears.

The IFI isnt the only conservative group that wants Britney to stay away from the GOP convention.

'I do hope she won't be there,' Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition tells the scoop.

"If you think a cross-dressing, needle-stuck walking corpse like Alice Cooper is "cool,"

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Marilyn Manson instead of Alice Cooper?

Cooper's stage persona is quite unusal as well, yet not what i'd call cross-dressing, which Manson is.

Excuse me, is "slutbag" a common term for dedicated Christians?

You have pictures of Reagan on your home page, and links to several well-repected Christian leaders and links to Christian sites.

How often would you say that Ronald Reagan used the term "brainless slutbag" while discussing a fellow American?

Can you recall how many times the Reverend Billy Graham, Dr. Vernon McGee, or Pastor Chuck Smith have referred to other people as "brainless slutbags" or "morons" during their sermons?

And last but not least, should I raise my children not to emulate Britney, but follow your witness of Christian-like behavior when they speak about others?

The convention is a symbol of honor, integrity, morality, patriotism, and service to your country.

Bravo Sierra. A modern convention is a dog and pony pep rally meant to attract the biggest television audience it can. Your suggestion is quaint, but completely untrue.

It's also unofficial pork for the business community wherever it may be.

For the reasons given by Cooper, we don't need Alice Cooper and we don't need Britney Spears. Only morons need people like that in order to decide how to vote. Is the republican party willing to compromise their principles in order to attract the moron vote?

You need to re-read post #8 on this thread.

All I took offense to was your reference to the "God Squad" as partypoopers; I mean, without us (the base) the GOP has nothing to build a majority on.

I meant no offense . . . just my personal interpretation of things. I'm a "mind your own business, not mine" conservative. My conservatism does not stem from my religious beliefs, as it does for others.

I can agree to an extent. Strong new ideas are cool . . . for you and me. Not for the majority of the mindless 18-30 drones out there that are told what to think. Don't forget, these people didn't grow up listening to Walter Cronkite or Dan Rather. They heard from Kurt Loder and Serena Altschul. Let's face it, compared to Loder and Altschul, Dan Rather looks impartial!!

Springsteen, Spears, Alice Cooper, Dave Matthews, etc. aren't "cool" for their political views (no matter which side of the fence they're on). They, and their fellow celebrity activists, are seen as "cool" for their artistic talents. That opens the door for them and they are able to speak about their political beliefs and have them heard once the door is open.

With this group of voters, let's face it, James Dobson, Dick Cheney, Bill Bennett, etc. can't even get that door open! We have to have a "celebrity" factor to get the door open and then espouse the ideas relayed to them by the true wonks!

Never underestimate the power of the young vote. Don't forget that what probably put Bill Clinton over the hump in '92 was that he went on MTV and the Arsenio Hall show. He knew how to play up to that group of voters, and we should learn from his lesson!

The convention is a pre-packaged, over-produced, meaningless party. It's an excuse for Republicans from all around the country to come and party on the dime of corporate supporters of the GOP and maybe get some lap-dances in NYC.

Whether or not Britney Spears shows up will make no difference whatsoever.

I was merely hurling insults.

Um, the "pre-teen" you are speaking about is a 22 year old adult. As I have said in previous postings, Miss Spears probably does dress a bit too provocatively. But, let's put it in proper context for a bit. When she is dressed so provocatively, she is performing on stage. Is she any less covered than the average Radio City Rockette was in the 1940's? Besides, nothing she has worn in public (that I have seen at least) would be considered more than PG-13, and probably could make it into a PG movie too!

Ideas are hard for the typical swing voter. They're not interested in ideas. Hence, star power.

Maybe Britney can be the one giving those lap-dances in NYC (hey I'll be there, I don't mind)! ;)

Hey, I don't begrudge the delegates a good time. If you've worked your butt off as a volunteer for the GOP in some godforsaken part of Idaho or Utah, you deserve to party in the Big Apple for a few days.

And if part of that fun includes a little bit of bump and grind from the fine fallen angels at Scores, who am I to say you shouldn't enjoy it?

Don't forget, either, that young kids watching this who can't vote now will associate being pro-GOP with being "cool," or at least "acceptable," and remember it when they get to voting age and begin to develop a political identity of their own. To many young people, the GOP is the school marm smacking you over the head because your pants are too tight or you listen to that damn Beatle music. Impressions are important; if we can make a good impression on young people, they'll be more willing to accept the reason behind our politics once they become mature enough to think about such things like mature people.

I know so many knee-jerk Democrats around here (Boston) who can't back their political views with any substance at all. I can only imagine these people "became" Democrats because the received positive images of them in their formative years . . . college, for most, where Dems/liberals were cool and rad and Repubs/conservatives were staid and uptight.
