CAMP TAQADDUM, Iraq (Aug. 25, 2004) -- Several senior military leaders recently visited Marines, sailors and soldiers of the 1st Force Service Support Group here, while touring Marine bases throughout Iraq.

The visits allowed leaders to see firsthand the conditions their men and women face daily, personally thank them for their service and gather knowledge which will assist them in making decisions that affect the troops.

Approximately 30,000 troops with the I Marine Expeditionary Force are deployed throughout Iraq at the behest of the Interim Iraqi Government to help stabilize the country's fledgling democracy.

"The world is a much safer place because you're here now," said Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps John L. Estrada during his visit here Aug. 19, 2004, with his counterpart, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Terry D. Scott.

The Corps' No. 2 general, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. William L. "Spider" Nyland, and the Deputy Commandant for Installations and Logistics, Lt. Gen. Richard L. Kelly, visited troops here Aug. 24, 2004.

Army Brig. Gen. Yves Fontaine, commanding general of the 1st Corps Support Command, met with Marines and soldiers on Aug. 22, 2004, to discuss ways for the Army and Marine Corps to work together more closely to provide logistics support to combat units in Iraq.
