Mexico Arrests Smugglers of Iraqis, Iranians to U.S.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican federal police arrested a people smuggler who sneaked illegal immigrants, including Iraqis and Iranians, into the United States, the attorney-general's office said on Wednesday.

Police detained Agustin Chan Montoya as he left his home in the city of Mexicali, near the border with California.

The attorney-general's office said Chan Montoya was one of the people smugglers most sought by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

His clients were often "of Asian origin, including Iraqis and Iranians," the attorney-general's office said. He helped them reach Mexicali by plane and then cross into California.

Security analysts say the U.S-Mexican border is potentially a weak spot in the U.S. fight against terror, but the Mexican authorities did not say whether any of the illegal immigrants smuggled by Chan Montoya were suspected of terror links.

Mexico has tightened security on the border since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

Thousands of illegal immigrants enter the United States through the 2,000-mile border with Mexico every day, often with the help of people smugglers.

It probably is only for show --- just like Vicente Fox promised to do something about the violent drug cartels and hasn't done a thing except a little here and there for show, they're just as powerful and violent as ever and more drugs than ever come over from Mexico.

Any bets on how low his bail will be? He's probably already out as I type this.

Mexico has tightened security on the border since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

IMO Just temporarily in order to raise the price of corruption....

I'm not aware that workmen's comp is exempt if you hire family members. Payroll is Payroll. Workmen's comp is based on gross payroll. This could be an item for the State AG and ARNOLD to look into.

Wrong, you don't need to cover immediate family members with Workers Comp. How do you think all these foreigners stay in business? Most only hire their own.

When you see an entire family running a business, bet the rent, Dad IS NOT paying workers comp for those family members. Trust me.

Our southern border is a joke. Nothing will tighten it up until bombs go off in El Paso, Dallas, Houston, etc.

I don't think Mexico has even tightened security at all --- it's just being made to look like it has so we can feel safe in having our borders wide open --- we can believe ole Vicente is taking care of everything for us. For one the crime rate in Mexico is exploding out of control, thousands of people have been kidnapped for ransom and the drug lords continue to hold a strong grip on everything. If Fox's government was at all competent, they would do something about the kidnapping on it's own citizens --- his fellow wealthy in most cases.

Evidently, the plan to dissolve the border with Mexico is threatened with the unforeseen problem of potential terrorists entry. This perceptual remedy is calculated to calm unrest on the US side.

I swear, Houston and Dallas could disappear tomorrow, and I still don't thing those in charge would do anything.

are they finally taking this seriously?

No, they've finally heard us complaining. That, and somebody proved to them that terrorists are coming across the border...i.e., the Pakistani woman with the S/A passport in MacAllen, Tx.

I also believe the I-10 shoot-out may have been an eye-opener for many.

Here's a thought. You can't call it immigration if they're being smuggled across the border.

hmm,... are they finally taking this seriously?

Nowhere nearly as seriously as "they" should from all that I can see.

it would be in mexico's interest to stop all moslems from entering the united states, if only to protect their emigrants to the states.
