US warplanes violate Iran's air space: press report
Payvand ^ | Aug 24, 2004

Posted on 08/25/2004 12:34:27 PM PDT by Rutles4Ever

Tehran, Aug 24, IRNA -- Five US warplanes entered Iran's air space last Thursday night from the southwestern Shalamcheh border and flew over the city of Khorramshahr for a while, press reports said Tuesday. According the Persian daily Seday-e Edalat, 'the jet fighters which flew at high speed and altitude, then headed to the Arvand River'.

"They flew at a height of 10 kilometers and maneuvered over Khorramshahr for a while," the paper said.

"While the objective behind the fighters' violation of the Iranian air space is not known yet, some military specialists believe such moves are aimed at assessing the sensitivity of the Islamic Republic's anti-aircraft defense system," it added.

It said military and air force officials had refrained from commenting on the incident when contacted.

Iran has been wary of the occupation forces' presence on its doorsteps in Iraq and carefully watched their movements.

Tehran, while opposing Iraq's invasion, took a position of `active neutrality' at the time of the attack.

In June, Iranian naval guards seized three British boats with eight crew in the country's territorial waters in Arvand river, which borders Iraq.

The servicemen, two Royal Navy sailors and six Royal Marine commandos, were later released.

Their equipment reportedly consisted of personal weapons, radios and navigation equipment, including echo sounders to measure the depth of the water, global positioning systems to identify the exact position and up-to-date maritime charts.

The Times newspaper has said that Iran had agreed only "in principle" to return the boats, but that there had been little progress about the manner in which they would be given back.

"While the objective behind the fighters' violation of the Iranian air space is not known yet, some military specialists believe such moves are aimed at assessing the sensitivity of the Islamic Republic's anti-aircraft defense system," it added.

We might has well get over it. The war on terror isn't done with until Iran, Syria and North Korea are taken care of.

It was posted. It's either a fake report by Iran for publicity purposes or there was an actual recon mission.

Iran, please remember.......... You are the ones that wanted to dance with us.

What the heck, we might as well get it over and be done with it.

I agree with Brilliant, I don't think this actually happened. I think some Iranians are really deluded enough to think that they could openly attack our forces in Iraq and international pressure would restrain us from responding. This is just like their threat that they will attack us to protect their nuclear program.

"... and it appears that there is NO anti-aircraft defence system...."

That's not the *appearance* at all.

This is the 3rd misadventure into Iranian territory since our 2003 invasion began.

In our March 2003 opening bombardment, some of our GPS-guided cruise missiles went off-course, crashing into Iranian mountain sides. Earlier this year, 2 Royal Navy crews were picked up inside Iranian waters, though the crews claimed to have been on the Iraqi side of the border.

These U.S. aircraft crossing into Iranian airspace now fits with the above incidents to give the *appearance* that Iran is successfully jamming or spoofing our GPS signals.

Keep in mind that Iran is currently jamming our satellite signals into Tehran for our dissident radio programs against their mullahs/imams/ayatollahs, so another form of jamming wouldn't be out of character.

We also captured a number of Iranian Special Operations in our fighting in Najaf and Fallujah. We are sending a message to Iran, the US is willing to up the antee.

That is an interesting analysis. Are there any recent or current military fliers on this thread? Do fighters now only use GPS or do they still also use inertial navigation?

Not sure where the boats were taken,

but Khorramshahr is a town in southwestern Iran with about 70,000 inhabtants (2003 estimate) on the west bank of the Karun River, where it enters the Shatt El Arab, close to the border to Iraq.

Maybe there is a facility in that area that we might be considering losing the facility status ? OOPS was that our cruise missle that went off-course ? Gee, good thing it just hit that deserted mountain...

The standard tactical unit for our aircraft are 2 or 4 ship formations. We don't travel in 5 ship formations because someone is left without a wingman. This "intrusion" never happened.

The troubling aspect is that these incidents continue to occur. That implies that the Iranians are matching our anti-jamming patches.

These incidents should also serve as a warning to Israel to not *rely* upon GPS for any missile or bomb attacks on Iran's nuclear reactor.
