JENNER, Calif. More mystery in the investigation into the killings of two youth camp counselors on a remote Sonoma County beach.

A Jenner man has told investigators that he saw the couple alive more than 24 hours after they failed to show up for work at a Christian youth camp.

Lodge owner Bert Rangel told the San Francisco Chronicle he's certain he saw the couple last Monday night. The couple had stopped to ask if there were any cabins available.

23-year-old Lindsay Cutshall of Ohio and 26-year-old Jason Allen of Michigan were reported missing last Monday after they failed to show up at an El Dorado County youth camp.

Their bodies were discovered Wednesday on just a few miles north of Jenner. Police have not identified any suspects, and no arrests have been made.

Even one of the initial stories, a few days ago, had some local merchant saying he'd seen them "on Monday" - - but the article (and the apparently brain dead reporter or editor) passed over that fact as if it weren't strange. Now, it's the focus of follow-up stories -- and it IS strange.

From San Fran Chronicle:

"Along the Sonoma County coast, sheriff's detectives crawled Tuesday over three makeshift structures crudely fashioned from driftwood where drifters are known to have camped on Fish Head Beach. Some of the 6-to-8-foot tall structures were emblazoned with messages, ranging from creepy warnings to love notes. One sign declared the damp gray sand as "my beach." Another sign at the entrance of a dwelling was "The driftwood sinn." A piece of wood that read, "I hate all" was wedged into a wall. "

Not beyond the possibilties of 'strange people' getting involved in this story in Californina. . .

Seems the 'time of death' can be established fairly easily.

I am hoping that 'one more psychopath' is NOT rewarded with 'fame' and celebrity; by way of the continuum of 'media legal analyst teams; et al and ad nauseum'. . .

Forensics could pinpoint the time of death to within a few hours. They would easily know the difference between dead for 2 days and dead for 12 hours.

Clearly. So whose bodies were those that they found?

Probably a mistaken witness account.

A Wisconsin man turned himself in for questioning Tuesday about the mysterious murders of two campers on a Sonoma County beach.

Investigators say 21-year-old Nicholas Scarseth might have been in the area when Lindsay Cutshall and Jason Allen were shot in their sleeping bags on remote Fish Head Beach in Jenner.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department called Scarseth "a person of interest." They put out a statewide alert for the drifter after residents of Jenner identified him.

[snip]

Karen Scarseth said that her son dislikes Christian people, and "He brings up religion and politics to irritate people. He likes to stir people up."

She described her son as a drug addict and an alcoholic.
"He's not a violent guy," she said. "He just looks a little creepy. He's real smart but he has an alcohol problem. He's not vicious or malicious, but when alcohol gets in there, who knows."

But Mark Scarseth, Nicholas Scarseth's father, defended his son.

"Any parent is going to say this, but I don't believe this is something Nick is capable of," he said. "We all want whoever did this caught. That's the bottom line."

By current criminal law standards, hasn't this "Jenner man" just volunteered as the most likely suspect?

I'm sticking with the drug theory, with the additional point that if the beach was used as a homeless encampment, the triggerman might have been some loon of a bum who was regularly paid by local dealers to "guard the beach".

In any case, this reported siting the day AFTER they're supposed to have returned to their place of employment adds to to the mystery.
