McClintock Looks Into Bid for Lt. Gov.

The Republican state senator from Thousand Oaks plans to form a panel to conduct polls on his chances in 2006.

SACRAMENTO — State Sen. Tom McClintock, who raised his public profile while splitting the Republican vote in last year's gubernatorial recall election, said Tuesday that he was considering a run for lieutenant governor in 2006 and expected to set up a committee next month to explore that option.

McClintock, a conservative lawmaker from Thousand Oaks, prompted the ire of moderate Republicans when he refused to drop out of the recall race to make way for Arnold Schwarzenegger, who later won.

Since then, the new governor has made peace by hosting a lucrative fundraiser for the senator, despite McClintock's criticisms of Schwarzenegger's budget.

Now, McClintock said he and Schwarzenegger may have the opportunity to unite California's fractious Republicans by forming a conservative-moderate ticket that would be difficult for Democrats to beat.

"Clearly, such a ticket would unite the party in a manner that would have an important positive effect for the entire ticket," McClintock said. "It's something I'm seriously considering and do expect to file papers to establish an exploratory committee in the next several weeks."

Though a Pennsylvanian, I proudly supported Governor Schwarzenegger in 2003, but I would be equally delighted to see Sen. McClintock as Lieutenant Governor and the Governor's likely successor.

It really feels good to ee that the California GOP has a brain on its shoulders now. Would that I could say the same about New Jersey.

I voted for McClintock in 2003, and I hope he throws his hat into the ring.

Well, I supported McClintock in his run, but had accepted the fact that in California Arnold was more electable. However, it makes me wonder how all the other McClintock supporters on FR will feel about this, after all that time, energy, anger, and emotion they spent painting out Arnold to be the Second Coming of Satan...

This should be interesting, to say the least...

...and to think that the "satanic RINO" governor would campaign hard for McClintock to be elected Lt. Gov.

I wonder how Parsky and the "New Majority" country clubbers would feeel about that ticket?

It could be setting their cause and agenda back, depending on your point of view.

strange bedfellows, politics, yada yada. ;-)

Politics makes strange bedfellows!!!

"Never fall in love with a politician... They'll break your heart everytime!" (Lee Rodgers, KSFO Hot Talk AM 560 where Mr. Steele, Republican Party leader and co-host and activist extraordinarire Melanie Morgan gave birth to "The Mother of All Recalls")

I'm more enthralled with the IDEAS & IDEALS of people like Bill Simon and Tom McClintock than I am with their low-key personalities. It's gonna be a long time till we get a true combination of Governor Reagan's IDEALS and Governor Reagan's personality. In fact it may never happen again!!!

All I know for sure is I don't like my state in bondage with 1/5th in a bleepin, land grabbin CONservancy run by Robert Kennedy, Jr's GANG-GREEN!!! THAT... is headin in exactly the WRONG DIRECTION in less than one year!

All Californians should be keepin one eye on the BIG PICTURE and not get all starry eyed with celebrity lust for the LONG HAUL!!! It's really not paying off when you step back at take a thoughtful, considerate look at ALL THINGS CONSIDERED!!! (McClintock involved, or not!)

Which FReeper(s) ever compared AS to the "second coming of Satan???" That's pure hyperbole!!! (and quite laughable)

Sorry, but that is nonsense. People voted for McClintock because he was the only person who could solve the problems California had. McClintock supporters were the ones demonized because they weren't pure enough for the others. I support the governor whenever he does something good.

I have many good conservative friends, well, some of them are now former friends, that started getting overly nervous about what they called "the Taliban wing" of conservatives, taking too much control of the Party.

I tried to tell them to calm down about the "churchy" conservatives, because they have rights too. After all they paid their dues and walked the precincts, etc. But it did no good. They felt uncomfortable with 'em even bein in the Party, let alone holding positions of prominence.

This is where we're bein split apart and it doesn't help when the chairman of the local Central Committee wants to start every meeting with the famous biblical prayer that even Jesus Christ criticized: "Oh thank God that I am not as other men!" That's the crappola that a few fanatics have done to rip apart "righteous conservatism" in the Party and I see the split even here on FR!!!

The straw that has broken conservatives backs in CA was the 1998 campaign with Lungren who isn't even a righteous conservative, but allowed Davis to make him look like a member of the danged Taliban over abortion and such!

I'm not using the word "righteous" in the biblical sense, but what the secular conservatives are up-set about is the Self-Righteous Conservatives that scared the voting public!!! Now, this has neutered conservatism in it's entirety in CA. We now have this destructive battle between the Country Clubbers and the Churchy types. Reagan appealed to both and that's what we have to get back to!!!

Here's my two cents.

California Republicans came to McClintock with this idea. McClintock didn't hatch the idea on his own.

Even if Schwarzenegger wanted to run again he'd be hard pressed to win the party's primary against a popular conservative. He'd have a hard time being reelected if the Democrats put up a popular, moderate candidate. He'd be a sure looser if the Democrats sponsored a conservative candidate.

Schwarzenegger is a taint. He taint a conservative and he taint a democrat. While Schwarzenegger would be a natural for the Democrat party he's proving to be problematic for the California Republican Party.

Schwarzenegger and his moderate sponsors solve two problems with McClintock on the ticket. They mend fences with conservatives providing enough firepower to be competitive in November and preclude the possibility of having their weak sister embarrassed in the primaries.

They came to McClintock because they are losing their base. Arnold's Sierra Nevada Conservancy, his solar system requirements for new homes, his pushing smart growth on all of California and his unconstitutional remaking of the state government called the California Performance Review have all the style and substance of a fine soviet-based Socialist government.

The party is trying to save itself from a position that is not very tenable.
