For Kerry detractor O'Neill, the feelings still run deep - conservative darling

Conservative darling was in same Vietnam swift boat division

HOUSTON -- With puffy eyes and a tired smile, veteran John E. O'Neill sank into a chair in his office conference room earlier this week looking more like an overworked lawyer than a political firebrand. But his comments left no doubt: O'Neill is helping run what is arguably the most aggressive outside campaign to defeat Senator John F. Kerry thus far in the presidential election cycle.

Kerry challenges critics over his Vietnam War record. A9

"He is unfit to be commander in chief," O'Neill, 58, said in an interview in his sleek downtown law firm.

Asked his opinion of the Democratic nominee, O'Neill paused, then turned his thoughts back to the day more than three decades ago when he first heard Kerry contend that war crimes were being committed in Vietnam.

"I resent deeply what he did in 1971," O'Neill said. So outraged was O'Neill, who served in the same swift boat division as Kerry, that he put himself forward as the conservative rebuke to young antiwar activist, squaring off in public debates over the activities of US troops and the justness of the war itself.

And here's how you can help O'Neill - for free:

EVERYONE should be calling their local public library and asking nicely (don't demand) that their reference librarians get (that means buy) multiple copies of any and all of "our" books, especially O'Neill's. The MM people do this all the time. This is how he sells so many of his hate books. He cozied up to the librarians a few years back and got some nice press from the ALA - the American Liberal (sorry) Library Association - and they all just luv him - I know, I work with them. But they have to respond to the patrons - our golden rule. Just be polite, and be persistent. If they have it, chances are it is checked out. Put your name on the reserve list and ask them to get more copies.

This is a great, free way of getting O'Neill's book selling and out there. Call them now!!! It works.

By the way, if you get any lip from a reference librarian, report them to their supervisors. It's a big no-no.

Wits, fortitude, and a strong conviction that he is doing the right thing.

They should assign security guards to him, any family, and his fellow veterans. I suspect they're in need of some heavy security. As this campaign gets dirtier, I sense that the DNC will stoop to using dirty union thugs, lawyers, and hookers to create a scandal or hurt these men.

If any of you are praying, include him and these men in the your prayers.

And this irreverent remark just occurred in the part of my brain that isn't allowed to say anything in church... "If there is any collaboration between Bush and the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, it is between them and God and back again." Let's see them try and indict Him for campaign finance law violations...

With puffy eyes and a tired smile, liberal darling Anne E. Kornblut sank into her cubicle at the Boston Globe and wondered, "What in the world can I write about today that will help old Lurch?" and then she had an inspiration and began to write: "With puffy eyes and a tired smile...."

They are so damn stupid. That's why so many people can't stand liberal elite snobs who think they know everything. I can't imagine John Kerry doing that. Instead he marries a couple of millionaires to become a genuine GIGOLO. GOD BLESS YOU JOHN O'NEILL. What a wonderful testament to your character.

"Conservative darling"? Is this agitprop supposed to be an op-ed, or is it more editorializing under the guise of "news"?

And I don't think that appellation even fits. Seems I read somewhere that O'Neill voted for Gore in 2000, or something like that. Can anyone confirm/deny?

I read this article in the paper earlier. It seems to me that for the Globe it was a bit less harsh than some of the other articles which are so promient concerning Bush. The Globe is constantly inserting little jibes into just about every piece of news that they can which belittles President Bush. This writer certainly took a few shots at President Bush naturally, but I sense a subtle change in the slanting.

We may see a greater change in the tilting of the news concerning Kerry by the libs which might indicate that they are abandoning or preparing to abandon him. I certainly hope that the rumors are true about bigger things coming from the Swift Boat vets. It seems likely that it is.

Already tepid news entertainers such as O'Reilly are trying to get this matter out of the focus of news consumers. Meanwhile embarrasments such as Matthews only help the Swifties with their unreasonable vitriol, virulence, and and character assassination.
