I've had three MRIs of my head. No metal allowed
on your body in the MRI room.

An Aluminum boat when struck would produce a non magnetic peace of shrapnel.

What a stooge...Kerry gets himself an MRI after falling off his bike. Suck it up, for crying out loud.

I wonder if Kerry's socialized medicine plan will allow for anyone who skins their knee to get a thousand dollar MRI scan? Because, you know, he fought in Vietnam and knows all about the blue-collar lifestyle.

Shrapnel isn't an absolute contraindication for an MRI.

MRI Contraindications

Contraindications We cannot scan patients with pacemakers, defibrillators or other implanted electronic devices.

Compatability Cardiac MRI is safe with joint replacements, coronary stents, ASD/PFO closure devices, sternal wires and most prosthetic heart valves. Patients with a history of metallic implants / shrapnel / prior neurosurgical clip placement are all individually evaluated prior to MRI.

But considering the considerable cost and hassle of an MRI, and the additional risk of the MRI due to his supposed shrapnel, he was probably just b.s.ing.

From a FAQ on MedicineNet.com

What are the risks of an MRI scan? An MRI scan is a painless radiology technique which has the advantage of avoiding x-ray radiation exposure. There are no known side effects of an MRI scan. The benefits of an MRI scan relate to its precise accuracy in detecting structural abnormalities of the body. Patients who have any metallic materials within the body must notify their physician prior to the examination or inform the MRI staff. Metallic chips, materials, surgical clips, or foreign material (artificial joints, metallic bone plates, or prosthetic devices, etc.) can significantly distort the images obtained by the MRI scanner. Patients who have heart pacemakers, metal implants, or metal chips or clips in or around the eyeballs cannot be scanned with an MRI because of the risk that the magnet may move the metal in these areas. Similarly, patients with artificial heart valves, metallic ear implants, bullet fragments, and chemotherapy or insulin pumps should not have MRI scanning.

Hmmmmmmmm

This is stupid - the Rice he still carries from Vietnam wouldn't effect an MRI...

I've had MRE's before; they're surprisingly delicious.

I hadn't heard he had an MRI

I'm not a doctor .. but I would assume it would cause problems

This is my first vanity post, so forgive me.

You're forgiven. You and everyone else will get over it. Welcome aboard.

...considering that he also claims to have shrapnel in his leg from Vietnam, doesn't it make an MRI impossible due to the metal's magnetic interference.

Military bump...

Kerry had the MRI shortly before the surgery to INSERT the shrapnell, knowing he would shortly be running for president after signing off on the McCain/Feingold bill.

MRI RESTRICTIONS...

"Some implants, clips, or shrapnel (ie, in veterans) within the patient’s or caregiver’s body can “twist” to align with the magnetic field. This twisting can be disastrous, if the forceful movement and position of these objects is such that they crush or pierce vital tissues or organs."

My friends...Mr Kerry has been caught in yet another lie.

Several months ago, John Kerry fell off his bicycle while riding in Boston, and subsequently told reporters that he got an MRI just as a precaution.

I'm surprised he didn't put in a request for a yellow jersey.

I almost expect Kery to call a press conference to announce, "Because the Internet makes it virtually impossible for me to lie anymore, I regret to say I am withdrawing from the race."

http://www.ecureme.com/emyhealth/data/Musculoskeletal_MRI.asp

Let your radiologist or technologist know when you have a metal object in your body, such as a cardiac pacemaker, prosthetic heart valve, prosthetic hip or knee joint, implanted infusion pump, intrauterine device (IUD), cochlear implant, aneurysm clip or vascular clips, hearing aid, metal monitoring device, surgical staples, metal plates, pins, screws, bullets, shrapnel or any metal fragments.

This is because the strong magnetic fields can cause these ferromagnetic metal objects to move, dislodge, cause burns, or electrical currents.

Sorry to rain on the speculative parade but JFK can safely have an MRI every time he earns a biking related purple heart.

Many patients are scanned safely with metal rods, shrapnel, hip and knee replacements etc. The metal will degrade the adjacent anatomy but it is not a health risk to the patient or a contraindication to scanning a different part of the body.

Contraindications for MRI include cochlear implants (sorry Rush), cerebral aneuryms clips, and metal within the eyes. Pacemakers aren't safe since the magnet may induce an electrical current within the pacing wires.
