Kerry's MRI following bicycle accident was impossible
WPHT 1210am | Aug. 25, 2004 | MojoWire

Posted on 08/24/2004 9:20:46 PM PDT by Edit35

Several months ago, John Kerry fell off his bicycle while riding in Boston, and subsequently told reporters that he got an MRI just as a precaution.

Now, considering that he also claims to have shrapnel in his leg from Vietnam, doesn't it make an MRI impossible due to the metal's magnetic interference.

This is my first vanity post, so forgive me. But I just heard WPHT radio host Rolleye James talking about the impossibility of Kerry getting an MRI with metal in his leg, and I thought I post the info.

I never had an MRI so I'm not sure.

but it would depend on what part of his body they performed the MRI on. I don't think that matters at all. The whole thing IS a big magnet and would pull the metal out of the leg.

Not sure you're right. My son had a metal plate put in his back 15 years ago and last year he had an MRI.

This is stupid - the Rice he still carries from Vietnam wouldn't effect an MRI...

HEY .. that was dangerous rice he was hit with .. Del Sandusky said so ..
Seems now Kerry REFUSED to be operated on.

http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/politics/9474374.htm

(SNIP)

Kicking off two days of pro-Kerry events across Pennsylvania on the eve of expected new anti-Kerry TV ads sponsored by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth group, Del Sandusky said he personally witnessed the battle action for which Kerry received Silver and Bronze stars and two of his three Purple Hearts.

"He deserved every one of his medals," Sandusky, a retired computer repairman who drove Kerry's boat for nearly three months in early 1969, told a news conference at Pennsylvania's Capitol. "He carries a piece of shrapnel in his leg because he refused to be operated on and (spend) a couple of days in the hospital and leave us on the boat" without a commanding officer.

"I was there when he got wounded. I saw the blood. I don't care what Dole said," Sandusky said, referring to suggestions by Republican former Sen. Bob Dole and other Kerry critics that the Democratic presidential candidate received an early exit from combat for "superficial wounds."

I asked a MRI tech if it was safe to get MRI with 60 internal staples? Was told they just show up on the image as star bursts. No comment on other metals tho

He should have married her. Radiologists have magnetic personalities.

LOL!
She gave it her best.
He runs from marriage.

No metal; there was a patient killed sometime ago in the US because a portable O2 bottle was accidently left in the room. The MRI magnetic field sucked that thing up, hit the patient in the head and killed him/her. Rule #1: No metal.

I can't find anything on Google that says Kerry got an MRI after the fall. If you have it, post it.

I am an MRI tech. We do scan many vets who have bullets, shrapnel and other metallic things in the body. The concerns about metal in the body are more to RF induced heating more than the attraction to the magnet. Most shrapnel has enough scar tissue around it that the magnet wont pull it out. Most things that a surgeon puts in your body that may have metal in them is safe mostly because it is not attracted to a magnet, however electronic devices can be hazardous. VP Cheney cannot get near an MRI scanner because the changing magnetic fields could and have killed people with pacemakers. Rush Limbaugh cannot have an MRI scan as long as he has the cochlear implant imbedded in his ear due to magnetically induced currents into a coiled wire could burn him internally. Most metallic implants now a days are MRI safe, as are braces in the teeth. Some of the things implanted many years ago are attracted to the magnet such as aneurysm clips in the brain and a few other things, but MRI techs have a reference book an the contraindications.

"No MRI if you have any metal in you (shrapnel, braces, pins, etc.)"
Almost every adult has metal-containing dental fillings or crowns. While the crowns might be temporarily removable, the fillings are less so. This would make MRI impossible for most of adult population.

Silver and lead are not magnetic, Grenade shrapnel is metal and is magnetic

What do you think? Another in a long line of convenient lies? Not that it much matters as this point. Lie or not, he has already lost all credibility...if he ever had any.

The magnet doesn't know what it's scanning and the magnetic field doesn't care where the metal is. When the field is on any metal that is susceptible is heading to the magnet with vigor.

Sorry to disappoint, but it was just a recollection on TV of Kerry saying he got an MRI as a precaution.

Will check further, however.

If memory serves, the shrapnel from a 40mm M-79 grenade consists mainly of steel wire.

Isn't that the BIG magnet??? would think if there is any metal in your body you would meet that magnet pretty darn hard...

Well, no.

Depends on size of magnet. The larger the magnet, the better quality of the image. Most large hospital magnets are 1.5 Tesla. Imaging a leg that had a small shrapnel piece in it would "warp" and ruin the resulting image, rendering it useless. That assumes that the shrapnel is ferrous (magnetic) metal. If it's rice, then... Embedded in the body, it would not necessarily come ripping out. Just ruin the resulting image.

I've had them rip pens out of my pockets before, but they are becoming better shielded every year with the newer models. And I'm becoming better at de-metalizing before entering the "red-zone". That includes my wallet, with credit cards and all...
