The only way they could deliver a 1 megaton nuke if they could steal one (they don't have the techical capacity) would be to send it on a container ship.
Truer words were never written. :)
SYRIA BELIEVED TO HAVE CENTRIFUGES
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has assessed that Syria acquired components for centrifuges for the enrichment of uranium in what could be the most significant step in that Arab country's nascent nuclear weapons program.
U.S. officials said Syria was believed to have been a client of a nuclear smuggling network led by Pakistani nuclear chief Abdul Qadeer Khan. They said the U.S. intelligence community obtained evidence that the Khan network sold and delivered components for an unspecified number of Pakistani-designed P1 centrifuges to Syria.
Khan was said to have sold nuclear technology and components to such countries as Iran, Libya and North Korea. But the officials said Damascus through Firas Tlas, the son of Syrian Defense Minister Mustafa Tlas, became a customer of Khan in 2001.
The centrifuge components and other nuclear equipment were ordered by the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein via Syria, officials said. The centrifuges and nuclear equipment were said to have reached Iraq through Syria and deliveries might have continued after the fall of the Saddam regime in April 2003.

N. KOREA MARKETS TAEPO DONG-2 MISSILE
LONDON [MENL] -- North Korea has begun marketing the Taepo Dong-2 long-range missile to Middle East clients.
Western intelligence sources said the most likely client to purchase the Taepong-2 is Iran. The sources said Teheran has been negotiating with Pyongyang for the purchase of the Taepo Dong-2 as Iran's first intercontinental ballistic missile as well as a space launcher.
"Iran wants an ICBM and China and North Korea are already helping in the development of engines," a senior intelligence source said. "North Korea could eventually reach a deal to sell the Taepo Dong-2 to Iran."
The sources said in 2003 North Korea discussed the Taepo Dong-2 with Libya and Syria. But they said neither country pursued the issue.

It is interesting how the Caucasus resembles other terrorist sanctuaries (tribal areas of Pakistan, outlying islands of Indonesia and the Philippines, large portions of Afghanistan, the horn of Africa (Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania), and west Africa (Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, and Nigeria). None of these places have had modern, stable governmental authority. They are all either "no-man's lands" or under the control of a corrupt local or national government that will look the other way for a price.
The Russian struggle with the Caucasians has been the struggle over centuries of a political empire trying to subdue its rebellious periphery. It has only become a faultline for a primarily religious rather than political conflict in just the past decade or two.
The Russians don't seem to have gotten much good out of the Caucasian Wars two centuries ago (except good poetry).
The Dream
by Mikhail Lermontov (1841)
In noon's heat, in a dale of Dagestan
With lead inside my breast, stirless I lay;
The deep wound still smoked on; my blood
Kept trickling drop by drop away.
On the dale's sand alone I lay. The cliffs
Crowded around in ledges steep,
And the sun scorched their tawny tops
And scorched me - but I slept death's sleep.
And in a dream I saw an evening feast
That in my native land with bright lights shone;
Among young women crowned with flowers,
A merry talk concerning me went on.
But in the merry talk not joining,
One of them sat there lost in thought,
And in a melancholy dream
Her young soul was immersed - God knows by what.
And of a dale in Dagestan she dreamt;
In that dale lay the corpse of one she knew;
Within his breast a smoking wound showed black,
And blood ran in a stream that colder grew.
Translated by Vladimir Nabokov
Didn't mean to leave Syria out.
A couple other "local" regimes were reportedly playing footsie with Khan as well. The genie is out of the bottle.
THE DENVER POST
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. NORAD, the military command that monitors the skies over the United States and Canada, could expand to watch over potential attacks from the sea.
Gen. Ralph Eberhart, commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, said Wednesday that the nations ability to monitor threats from the sea is not as mature or sophisticated as its ability to monitor the skies.
A planning group of Americans and Canadians has been trying to decide if NORADs role should grow. The two nations update NORAD agreements every five years; the next agreement will be in place in 2006.
I believe its just a matter of time before the terrorists try to use a seaborn attack, a maritime attack against us, said Eberhart. He believes NORADs watchdog role will eventually be expanded to cover the seas.
I believe that ( a maritime) attack could come in terms of bringing a ship into port, whether its high explosives or whether its weapons of mass destruction, or standing off from a distance and launching a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) or launching a cruise missile. I believe that terrorists are looking at that manner, that means of attack.
Thank you both for the information you provided in post #179 and post #193.
Jihad' magazine for women on web
By Sebastian Usher
Radical Islamists have launched a new magazine publication on the internet especially for women.
The aim of the magazine is to show women how to reconcile the apparent contradiction of fighting jihad while maintaining family life.
The magazine is called Al-Khansa, after a famous Arab woman poet in the early days of Islam, who wrote eulogies to male relatives who had died in battle.
It appears to be the first "jihadist" publication aimed exclusively at women.
The magazine says it is published by an organisation called "The Women's Media Bureau in the Arabian Peninsula".
The main objective seems to be to teach women married to radical Islamists how to support their husbands
And it claims that the former leader of al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia, Abd-al-Aziz al-Muqrin - who was killed by Saudi security forces in June - was one of its founders.
Al-Khansa also appears to be linked to the most well-known jihadist outlet on the internet, Sawt al-Jihad - or Voice of Jihad.
The first edition of the magazine uses fierce language similar to that found on Sawt-al-Jihad.
One of its encouragements to jihad reads: "The blood of our husbands and the body parts of our children are our sacrificial offering." (snipped)

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) A bomb exploded at a busy morning market in Thailands troubled Muslim-dominated south Thursday, wounding at least 20 people, a police official said.
The device hidden in a motorcycle blew up at a market where police and soldiers often stop for breakfast in the Sukhirin district of Narathiwat province, police Lt. Col. Amnuay Pongsawat said.
Police believe the bomb was triggered by remote control when a truck carrying security officials arrived.
Four soldiers, six police officers and about 10 bystanders were wounded in the attack, seven of them seriously. The blast also damaged motorcycles and trucks parked nearby, he said.
Thailands largely Muslim southern provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani have seen a spate of violent attacks in recent months that officials blame mostly on Islamic militants.
Muslim separatists waged a low-key uprising against the central government for years before fading away after a government amnesty in the 1980s.
The attack came as a once-formidable Thai separatist group, the Pattani United Liberation Organization, posted a message on its Web site warning southern Muslims against frequenting nightclubs, police checkpoints, airports, railways and areas where important Thai officials may travel.

Note: A number of the extremist/jihad sites usually use a white horse (very AQ) and sometimes you see a black horse in the logo. Horses and motorcycles (motorcycle = the iron horse) are very in style these days.
In other words, racing horses may or may not be related to any specific events.
FYI.
KCAL9 had an update to the Orange County Radio Shack bandit. They played a video of one of the robberies, with pretty good audio. They said they think the guy is italian or hispanic, not middle eastern.
This made me laugh.
"One of its encouragements to jihad reads: 'The blood of our husbands and the body parts of our children are our sacrificial offering.'"
This made me scream and cry.
Radio Shack gets hit alot all over the U.S. because of their neat gadgets and gizmos. Just another case of run-of-the-mill thieves, I guess.
for sure - alot of int'l flights cancelled into NY on 9/2 - from someone I know who works for the airport.
what's the vibe here on TM - is this russian plane incident the first salvo (failed) in the next AQ offensive?
See post #210. Bomb planted in a motorcycle...
I say sept 2nd because it is the anniversary of the Brits using the gatling gun to mow down the Muhammeds in Sudan.
Yes, I made the connection many threads ago re: a jihad posting that mentioned "blue thunder." That also possibly referred to a motorcycle.
