Presidential candidate John Kerry telephoned former Sen. Bob Dole Monday morning to complain about Dole's demand a day earlier that he apologize to Vietnam veterans for protesting the war, the one-time Republican presidential candidate revealed Monday afternoon."John Kerry called me this morning, which surprised me," Dole told radio host Sean Hannity. "He said he was very disappointed, we'd been friends. I said John, we're still friends, but [the Swiftvets] have first amendment rights, just as your people have first amendment rights.
Dole told Kerry, "I'm not trying to stir anything up, but I don't believe everyone of these people who have talked about what happened are Republican liars.
"And very frankly, Bush is my guy, and I'm tired of people on your side calling him everything from a coward to a traitor to everything - a deserter."
Dole said he urged Kerry, "Why don't you call George Bush today and say, 'Mr. President, let's stop all this stuff about the National Guard and Vietnam - and let's talk about the issues."
Dole said Kerry responded, "I haven't spent one dime attacking President Bush."
But the Republican war hero shot back, "You don't have to. You've got all the so-called mainstream media, plus you've got MoveOn.org. and all these other groups that have spent millions and millions of dollars trying to tarnish Bush's image."
"Don't tell me you don't know what some of these people are doing," he told Kerry.
"Everybody like quiet heroes," Dole added, saying he told Kerry, "John, everybody knows you were in Vietnam and the less you say about it, the better."
Dole said he tried to end the tense conversation cordially by telling Kerry, "I wish you good luck, up to a point."
bttt
Inside word is that GOP leadership has told all potential Republican guests to boycott the Chris Matthews show.
Bush's comments about Kerry are not direct praise of Kerry. Bush doesn't say that HE is proud of Kerry's service. He said that KERRY -should be- (maybe he's not?) proud of his service. Damning faint praise on examination, but sounds great at first blush.
He can go on Mathews and claim seperation from Bush. This is a perfect squeeze.
Bob Dole was on Hannity today and he said all of that and much more.
Dole will appear on Hannity and Colmes tonight.
Hannity also had a very long and devastayting (for Kerry) interview with Paul Galanti, one of the POWs in the new Swiftee ad.
well executed classic Bush rope-a-dope play has the fathead
DU on the ropes...
down goes fathead!
I can hardly wait for the transcript.
This is an avalanche.
I heard it on Sean. Bob did good!!!
"By saying those nicey things about lying Kerry, you're stabing Dole in the back"
I respectfully disagree. Bush is making an equivocal statement about Kerry, then stepping aside and letting others who are more in a position to handle this thing go ahead and handle it. It's what he should do. If he responds directly, he'll get slimed big time and the message about the heroism of those real war heroes will get lost in the slime. It's not a lack of courage, it's just good CEO sense.
The same thing that's gotten into all of us .. WE'RE FED UP WITH THE ATTACKS ON PRESIDENT BUSH and America.
ROTFLMAO!!!!
...after I spit iced tea all over my new monitor....
The family's money?
OMG, I cant believe that is what you think is happening.
The President must stay out of the way on this issue, he must. By him saying he condemns not only the SwiftVets ad and all other 527 ad's he essentially ripped away from Kerry the Bush defence, you know the one where its a dirty republican smear campaign fostered by Rove and Bush. No the onus is on Kerry. Bush is letting the vets fight there own fight as well as he should otherwise, the myths about Bush's own service will continual to haunt him.
I think Bush did the right thing. This will distance himself from the ads. This whole thing needs to be looked at as 'Vietnam Vets vs John Kerry' . Remember this is the 1st ad from a trilogy that has been produced to tell a story about Kerry's service and diservice to his country and Vets.
Dole's a hoot. He's teaching Kerry what Kerry's father should have advised his nitwit son long ago. A real man doesn't say he's good; he lets others say it, if they're so inclined.
"Ye shall know them by their fruits." Matthew 7:16.
Wow! Sounds like a stupid whiney brat getting a good spanking from daddy.

"Phony Vietnam veterans alleged in books
Guenter Lewy's 1978 book America in Vietnam (pages 316-317) and B.G. Burkett and Glenna Whitley's Stolen Valor (Verity Press, Inc., Dallas, Texas)(pages 113, 131-137) contain similar information about alleged flaws in Lane's book. Neither book, however, refutes any of the testimony given during the Winter Soldier Investigation.
Lawyer and leftist activist Mark Lane was one of the organizers of Winter Soldier. In 1970, Lane had published a book called Conversations With Americans purporting to be interviews with Vietnam veterans about war crimes, containing Vietnam tales of atrocities. Reporter Neil Sheehan showed some interviewed in Lane's book had never served in Vietnam and others had not been in the situations they described. Lane admitted he did not check military records, as confirmation of details was not relevant. Lane later confirmed these militarty records.
The following are often falsely listed as being participants in Winter Soldier, but were actually in Lane's book instead. This confusion is probably due to Stolen Valor having an explanation of Lane's history within the section on Winter Soldier.
Chuck Onan, stock room clerk in Beaufort, S.C.
Michael Schneider, deserted in Europe and deserted again in the USA.
Terry Whitmore, was in an unpopulated area of Vietnam.
Garry Gianninoto, medical corpsman at battalion headquarters.
VVAW leader and Winter Soldier co-organizer Al Hubbard lied about being an officer, and sustaining war injuries - but he never testified at Winter Soldier .
According to the investigative work of Burkett, Lewy and others, there were many imposters, liars, and plain nutjobs who infiltrated the ranks of the anti-war movement, and, in some cases, testified to war crimes and atrocities that never occurred in order to get attention, sympathy, and, in one documented case, medals and honors."

As long as the President sticks to these kinds of statements the story remains Kerry/Swiftees.
Thats my understanding, let Sissy Blathews drift in the wind.
>Dole will appear on Hannity and Colmes tonight. <
That's a waste of a good asset. He needs to be on MSNBC,CNN and the Today show. They have to show him respect and let him speak. He has earned the right.
