"He ought to be proud of his record." .... This statement segways perfectly to Kerry's post-Nam activities. Smart play!

I agree that was a great post. The problem, however, is this: That's not what he said. What he said is acceptable under the circumstances and all that he had to say. The Swiftvet train is rolling and will not be derailed, and W knows that. The only downside is the way it is and will be reported, i.e., as only a failure to "denounce" the ads rather than an invitation to Kerry to join in calling a halt to all 527 ads, something Kerry would never do and something which wouldn't stop the Swifties anyway. Game, set, match.

Exactly. And it has never really been about money in politics. If it were then they would also gripe when politicians use tax dollars to bride the public. It has always been about silencing critics.

FACTS:

1) G.W. has not condemned the SwiftBoat veterans.

2) G.W. has not condemned their message.

3) G.W. has consistently stated that the existence of 527's is at odd with the spirit of the bill he signed.

4) G.W. has never questioned Kerry's service, he has always stated hw should be proud of that service.

5) G.W.'s statement today mirrors the WH position of the past few week that was overwhelming supported by people here.

6) People with an ax to grind about CFR have appeared on cue to Bash the President.

7) People who believe the MSM Spin rather than the facts have joined on cue to bash the President.

8) The President is the favorite whipping boy of Liberals and Conservatives alike.

Your point is arguable. Repeating it doesnt make it less so.

The MSM twisted what he said. If they can twist his words, it doesnt matter what he says, the MSM will try to make Kerry the winner on this.

Remember - BUSH NEVER RAISED THE ISSUE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Their campaign has NEVER gone there, and WONT. Bush is focussed on today's issues, not 35 year old bio points about Kerry.

So Bush's position hasn't changed at all, really. Maybe it will make it go away, maybe not. What give the Swift charges staying power is their truth - they rise or fall on that.

...."I'm going to let those who were in Vietnam debate the facts of what happened there. I wasn't there, as John Kerry and his supporters so delightedly point out at every opportunity."".....

I like that approach Spok. Stick Kerry in the eye, and let him fight his own battle for the truth.

In Texas at his ranch, Bush said, "I don't think we ought to have 527s," a reference to the outside groups that have poured millions of dollars over the past year into attack ads. Bush himself has been a main target of ads costing some $60 million. Bush said all of the ads should be stopped.

"That means that ad," he said, referring to the anti-Kerry ad, "and every other ad."

The anti-Kerry ad, no longer running but much publicized in news accounts, says Kerry didn't deserve his Purple Hearts, lied to get his Bronze Star and Silver Star and unfairly branded all veterans with his 1971 congressional testimony about atrocities in Vietnam.

With polls suggesting Kerry's standing was beginning to slip — at least among veterans — the Democrat last week called on Bush to call for the attack ads to be pulled from the air. He also accused Bush of allowing front groups to "do his dirty work."

Kerry's vice presidential running mate, Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites) of North Carolina, said Bush's comments on Monday fell short of what was needed.

"The moment of truth came and went, and the president still couldn't bring himself to do the right thing," Edwards said. "Instead of hiding behind a front group, George Bush (news - web sites) needs to take responsibility and demand that the ad come off the air."

"And if you know that you are going to be misquoted, you shouldn't say anything. "

LOL... That may explain why Bush doesnt have press conferences often.

You must be joking... He's said the same thing the whole time. Stop all 527's, which he knows Kerry won't do.

Plus, it is getting near time to stop highlighting john fonda's mis-service in Vietnam, and to start highlighting what he did after the war. In particular his highly treasonous anti-war activties. Not forgeting he is the most liberal senator in the senate, who even voted against supplying our troops in the field with Kevlar vests.

Your point is arguable. Repeating it doesnt make it less so.

Unfortunately, FR doesn't allow for easy responses to multiple parties.

Since approximately six people made the same point to me, and, since, most people don't read posts that aren't specifically pinged to them, in order to respond to them, I reposted the same point to several people.

I hope I am wrong, but typically, these things are twisted to hurt, not favor our side. We'll have to see, I guess.

"I believe it is fundamentally wrong and harmful to the free speech principles this coutry used to stand for."

Ahem - he said they should stop, a verbal statement about what would be good; they have free speech, so does Bush. he didnt start siccing the AG on them, or rifling through their IRS records.

Personally I like their #2 - far more hard-hitting than anything Bush has done so far.

He ought to be proud of his record.

Kerry ought to be proud - if it wasn't all a selfish lie. Kerry's pride will be his undoing.

Bush is shooting himself in the foot again.

Get a grip. You gotta learn smart politics when you see it. You didn't have to see Bush winking when he made his statement to "hear" Bush winking. Everybody, especially Dubya, knows that the SBVFT aren't going to stop their commercials.

No, he just asked the FEC to shut them down several months ago. He wants them banned by the full force of government.

In other words: Bush has been solid, consistent, stable, unwavering. And not desiring to embrace negative personal attacks.

He da man!!

Well, it will be nice when he starts saying something about the 20 years of doing nothing in the Senate. I would be pounding that hard now. Let everyone who is questionable about whom to vote for, know that in 20 years, this guy has not put in one item, nothing, on his own. Nothing has his name on it. He is just "there" collecting a check. Nothing else. Running his mouth and collecting a check. I would be pounding that every day till the election. Not in October, now. Leave no doubts.
