Touro College May Hit McGreevey With Lawsuit

Attorneys for the college that oddly figured into negotiations over a former aide's threatened sexual harassment lawsuit against Gov. James E. McGreevey say they may sue one of the aide's lawyers because he was not authorized to use Touro College's name.

McGreevey administration sources said Golan Cipel demanded millions of dollars and a charter for a New Jersey-based medical school for Touro College in exchange for remaining silent about his relationship with McGreevey.

Cipel, who sources said had an affair with the governor, worked for the Manhattan college for three months last fall when it was trying to establish a medical school.

But school officials said trustees never authorized Cipel to negotiate for them. Board attorneys are considering a lawsuit against Livingston lawyer Timothy K. Saia, who McGreevey sources said made the charter demand.

``Nobody involved with Mr. Cipel had an authority to use Touro's name,'' Franklyn Snitow, a lawyer for Touro College told The Record of Bergen County in Sunday's editions. ``Touro's relationship with Mr. Cipel ended almost a year ago.''

Saia, who is a partner at Morgan, Melhuish, Monaghan, Ardvidson, Abrutyn & Lisowski, could not be reached for comment.

Cipel's attorney Allen Lowy said Saia attended a negotiating conference in Manhattan with McGreevey's lawyers. Lowy said he did not know who invited him to the meeting and that the college was not discussed.

Administration sources say Saia called a McGreevey confidant 10 minutes before the news conference announcing the governor's resignation to make the Touro College demand. Lowy told the newspaper he did not know about Saia's last minute contact with the governor's office until he read media reports about it.

Touro College is a small private Jewish school that offers undergraduate and advanced degrees, including several related to health sciences.

Sounds like Touro College is going to hit Cipel with a lawsuit, not McGreevey.

I personally think the counter suit is just for show to CYA.

On another thread, this suit was welcomed for the discovery.

IMO, who would ask for discovery? Cipel/McG doesn't want to implicate himself/themselves, so he/they wouldn't ask for discovery.

The school wouldn't implicate themselves, so they won't ask for discovery for research.

This is just a propaganda move for distancing and 'looking good' for the best media story.

Unless things are cleaned up for REAL, the media story usually wins.
