Any Houstonians in the Southeast part of town step outside tonight? It smells NASTY. I know, I know, smelling up the news sounds funny, but you would have to smell it. I've lived in houston 30 of my 35 years, and about ten of those down here in the Clear Lake/Pasadena area, and I know what stenches can issue from the chem plants.
I've never smelled THIS - it's almost like someone detonated a city-sized rotten mango down here! Really, it has me concerned. It literally took my breath away.
Does anyone know what it might be?
(LOL. That's no joke. It really does!)
Okay, okay! I called Pasadena PD, and they said there is no report. I'll keep a nostil out for more.
Try the ER. Ask what the smell is. You don't have to give your name.
I don't think this has anything to do with cryptozooalogy, CAP. You stinker. [/pun intended]
I'll keep checking, and keep y'all posted if something comes up.
I think what got me going is that you reported some difficulty with breathing...that sets off my alarms, every time (I'm a nurse). Immediately, I worry. Can't help it, you're a fellow FReeper.
My concern is: suppose you go to bed, still breathing okay, and the air quality gets worse? Will that incapacitate you?
I don't mean to be alarmist. The other thing, of course, is that I'm a grandma. We worry as an absorbing hobby. ;-D
Thanks much, Judith. I'm watching out. FReepers care, and it shows.
I'm sure. H2S smells like rotten eggs. There is also CS2 (Carbinyl sulfide), but it comes in lower concentrations. There are tons of desulfurization plants near you. There are also lots of Natural Gas "sweetening" units.
They are taking Sulfer out of the petroleum products and then burning either burning it in an incinerator or capturing it in sulfer pits.
An upset should go straight to a flare. It looks like a giant torch. If you smell something, but don't see a flare, then there could be a problem. This is Bad. You should call the TNRCC it you keep smelling it.
Thanks for adding your voice to the concern of others, and me too.
This isn't right...and after you smell something for a while, you can get dulled to it...
Whoops! COS=Carbinyl Sulfide, CS2= Carbon disulfide, H2S=Hydrogen Sulfide
BTW, you can't smell H2S above 3 parts per million. Believe me. I KNOW!
Woo. I keep dreamin' of heading to the northwest part of town... may be time to look harder...
I posted a link to this thread, on the TM thread. There might be some other local FReepers who can give us some information.
At which point, it's a real problem, right?
Oh, and the upset-then-flare sequence, that I knew about. See it a LOT around here, lights up the sky beautifully... not!
Great idea.
I came thru there about 6 this morning and didn't notice anything. I only rolled down the window at Shipleys though:')
I prefer Ashley's myself. Grew up on Shipley's, but no longer really care for them.
Nope.
