Houston Area Petrochem Upset Event??
Posted on 08/22/2004 8:06:42 PM PDT by Frank_Discussion
Any Houstonians in the Southeast part of town step outside tonight? It smells NASTY. I know, I know, smelling up the news sounds funny, but you would have to smell it. I've lived in houston 30 of my 35 years, and about ten of those down here in the Clear Lake/Pasadena area, and I know what stenches can issue from the chem plants.
I've never smelled THIS - it's almost like someone detonated a city-sized rotten mango down here! Really, it has me concerned. It literally took my breath away.
Does anyone know what it might be?

Nope, not that stuff. This is worse, can you believe it? That's what is buggin me, I've smelled H2S, Acetone, natural gas blowoffs, misc other stuff, but not this. It's a very cloying stink, as well.

Haha, very funny. You'd have to have a gigantic clymer to achieve this, so I'll hold you blameless. (for now.)

Perfect. Sheesh, I knew this would draw out the potty humor... not that there's anything wrong with that...
Seriously, is there a chemist in the house? One working the plants tonight?

Here's hoping all is well, and it's not serious. That would concern me, too.

Hmm. Possible, but it would be a lot of leakage, which is bothersome. Thanks.

Is the wind from the South? I grew up in Texas City and you get used to the smell after awhile!

Sounds like H2S. Be thankful that you can smell it. You are getting from 1 to 3 ppm. If it goes much higher than that it could make you dizzy and give you headaches. You could even pass out an die.
Sucks to be you man.
