THINGS haven't been going so smoothly for John Kerry's campaign in the East End, Diary hears. The buzz is that sluggish ticket sales forced organizers to reduce prices to hang with the Democratic presidential nominee and wife Teresa Heinz Kerry this weekend.
Complimentary tickets were handed out yesterday to Kerry's $1,000-a-person schmoozefest at the Alan and Susan Patricof home and the $2,500-per-plate young-professionals event at Jean-Luc East, sources said.
The crowd at the Patricof's, between 500 and 700 people, was enthusiastic despite the pouring rain and Kerry's late arrival.
Jimmy Buffett performed as guests, including Christy Brinkley, huddled under tents to keep dry.
"Sex and the City" creator Darren Starr hosted a $25,000-per-plate party for Kerry, which the presidential hopeful also attended.
Today's hush-hush event for Teresa at Donna Karan's East Hampton home has been marked down from $10,000 a person to $5,000, Diary is told. Insiders blame hasty planning along with the fact that other benefits have siphoned away important campaign money.
But Kerry's Empire State campaign spokeswoman, Juanita Scarlett, said the Dem candidate has been warmly received here and any claims to the contrary are pure poppycock.

Yeah, they might do better with a $10 per head pig roast.
If Kerry isn't selling in the Hampton's he isn't selling in Peoria.
Yes, hang 'em all! (A little play on words....)
Since direct contributions are limited to $2,000/candidate/individual, to whom are these individuals writing their $10,000 checks?
Has Hillary & Bill held any Hampton's fundraisers for her thighness?
Kerry fund-raiser, Obama stay on the move

'If Jann Wenner calls,'' Lou Susman said of the Rolling Stone publisher, "tell him his are at the concierge." Susman has been the man to see for credentials to get some of the best seats at the Democratic convention. Wenner is being taken care of. That's because Wenner is a major Kerry fund-raiser. Wenner was one of the organizers of a Radio City concert earlier in the month. Susman, the Chicago-based vice president for Citicorps Global Markets Inc., is John Kerry's national finance director. He signed on with the Kerry campaign early on, when no one thought he had a chance.
Susman has been camped at the Four Seasons this week, the base for the Kerry high donor operations. He has raised record amounts of money for Kerry -- some $203 million -- "far and beyond our wildest imagination," he said between cell phone calls from his donors pleading for FleetCenter tickets. Susman has been perfecting the art of the ask for candidates for years. Except for the dark days when Howard Dean was surging, after Kerry's Iowa win, "this has been the easiest money to raise."
When it comes to perks for donors, Susman said modestly, "I have a little pull." He controls access to five skyboxes at the FleetCenter, each with 25 seats. "Some people come and go," he said, which is good, since that gives him more goodies to hand out. "And some people stay."
>>>>>>>>Susman, 66, threw an A-list lunch on Thursday to thank his best lieutenants. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) spoke to the 100 plus people. If things work out, the same group will reconvene at a Kerry inauguration. <<<<<<<
Vice presidential candidate John Edwards is due back in Chicago in early August for a big fund-raiser.
"Yeah, they might do better with a $10 per head pig roast."
Have they finally stooped to canabalism? Tsk, tsk, tsk.
When I went out and protested him, for 3 1/2 hours, he ran 50 minutes late, but I would do it again and again and again. Bad thing was it was 110 out there, wished someone would give him a new watch.
Looks like the swells are holding on to their money waiting for the real candidate.
The tony liberal ABB crowd in the Hamptons doesn't like Kerry. They want to get rid of Bush. Any one will do, even if he looks like a sad Bassett Hound.
The little wheels are coming off the campaign.
Soon food stamps will get you a first class meal and sitting arrangements at,"Kerry's Fund Raisers." The exquisite diamond ($10,000,000) has been truly revealed," a brightly colored glass bauble."( $.50 )
