Bangalore, Aug 21. (PTI): India has designed GSLV-MkIII, a heavier lift launcher that would meet the four tonne class communication satellite requirements, Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G Madhavan Nair said here today.

"We are already on the move. Already, design stage (of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, or GSLV, -MkIII) is over. We have started the fabrication of many of the systems," Nair said.

With GSLV-MkIII, the new generation vehicle which would be developed by ISRO by 2007-2008, India would be totally self-reliant in launching satellites with indigenous launch vehicles, he said.

Besides catering to the growing requirements of INSAT in the heavier payload class of four tonnes, Nair said, GSLV-MkIII would also help in lowering the cost of access to space.

"GSLV-MkIII will be the mainstay for accessing space in the next decade or two," he said delivering the Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Lecture on "India's advance space missions - challenges in materials development" and in an interaction with media later

Actually that would be a good idea -- that ISS needs to get rolling

Get ready for about three zillion fiery failures, one after the other. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of Indians starve. Pathetic.

Buddy,have you ever heard about

1.long distance education using satellites??
2.Weather forecasting making the lives of millions of Indian farmers far more easier??
3.Resource detection including minerals, petroleum & groundwater using remote sensing satellites??
4.Long distance medical/surgical cooperation using satellites-which is already proving to be a boon in many remote parts of India?

That the French,Germans & South Koreans are all developing satellites with India or launching them of Indian launch vehicles & that the Israel is developing a joint space telescope & spy sats with India-not bad for a country which has a zillion failures-huh??

If you have, you wouldn't have made such an ignorant statement.

What utter rot -- the Indians have a pretty good success rate with their space development -- they dont' go for the flashy stuff like the Chinese.

Besides, by your logic, the scientists who work on these satellites should become farmers? Are you some kind of Khmer Rouge commie? By that logic, we in the US should disband NASA and distribute the billions to the poor over here and around the world?

Don't worry about those fake worrywarts.

No matter what India, does, they will bitch, using the shibboleth of poverty as some battering ram.

America ditched her space program, science is America is gradually becoming a bailiwick of Indians, Chinese, etc as faith in science is no more in America.

You cannot cure poverty by social programs - look at America and JOhnson's war on poverty.

India is rightfully using science to pull her people and country into the 21st century.

More power to her for her forward thinking.

Failures are a precursor to success.

Asinine comments neglect to mention that any endeavor of science will include failures that will then lead to success.
