According to National Association of Homebuilders, 19 percent of homes built in 2003 were 3,000 square feet or more. But the appetite for larger and larger homes has run afoul of some. Namely those who've watched super-sized structures crop up next door.

I can start by stating that you have NO horse in this race. Your premise that it MAY effect the property value of something you MAY inherit. You whined about the fact that someone built something next to your mother's FRIEND, not next to your mother... How does that afect her value??? You are so full of yourself, that it astounds.
Well, maybe you did not stop to think that they have the same rights, as your mom's friend. You are just illustrating the classic NIMBY kneejek! Property rights are usually very clear, and with today's climate, I am sure they followed the law.
In the mid'90's, Disney wanted to build a Themepark in Northern Virginia. The area they wanted is not far from the horse farms of Middleburg (#1 $$$/household demographic Zip code in US). The hue and cry of "they will ruin us " soured the deal. Now, when you wish to drive from I-66 to US 17/50 to Winchester, you have a 45 mph speed limit on a road that used to be 55, for they found out they had power to keep the hoi-poloi away, or at least make it more desirable to use another route... They also banned trucks, causing a re-route which adds about 65 miles to their trip,

Well, you can live out in the boonies when you're young. After that house has appreciated, you can move in closer.
There are also smaller homes for about $500K, and you could afford that on $150K.

Also forgot to say, that sometimes companies will help with the down payment of a home if they want someone to work for them. That's what neighbors of ours did.
But if homes aren't affordable, then why are new home construction and home ownership at all-time highs? Why is there no demand for small, "affordable" houses, but a huge demand for McMansions?
I think it's like the internet bubble collapse. When these people are literally living from pay check to pay check it'll get really tiresome when they hit 45 yrs of age from burn out trying to keep up with all the bills and the Jones next door. Tragic fools

What I've been reading is that the good times are over and there will be a retraction... as I understand, now is not the time to buy... at least in CA so we will see.
During 1999 I noticed a whole bunch of folks buying Internet Stocks; every person from the paperboy to the physician wanted a piece of Silicon Valley..... I knew that when a guy with a nail stuck in his frontal lobe is talking about investments.... it maybe a good time to figure out what is going on... I knew clowns movin' up north who couldn't boil spagehtti getting jobs paying 60-100 dollars per year- they had no job skills. (how do I know? I went to school with them and spent many hours with them).... I asked, "What is going on up there? Steer clear, steer clear..."
That is exactly what I am seeing now.... when a mortgage is 500,000 dollars and the house is renting for 1300 dollars... and the owners are borrowing on the equity... and all the screwball variable mixed in that I fail to articulate (but have posted links to previously)~~~ It ain't a pretty sight>>> Next summer, after the incumbents are back in their political seats, look for hardly used vehicles for cheap in the LA area>>> A year later.... houses... I sure must have read this wrong. It says your mother has a friend. It did not say your mother lived next to it, or anywhere near it.

I think people should stop censoring. Whatever happened to freedom of thoughts and speech? This is only a message forum where people can exchange opinions.
Absolutely! They move to the country for the "rural ambience" and then they want curb and gutter, sidewalks, street lights, public sewer & water (which leaves their neighbor with huge connection fees cause we're all forced to connect). They wag the dog at city hall because of their numbers and tax presence and they get their way.
One case out here was a subdivision placed next to a farm -- farmer had to eliminate his chicken house and oultry operation (previously legal). Another case, subdivision goes in next to an owner who kept a couple of horses -- horse owner had to eliminate his electric fence because his new neighbor was afraid his children would get shocked -- keep the kids home, or buy a different house!
Another case with the same subdivision, the new home owner's association sued the owner of the original farm house because she had a metal swing set in her yard. Their association rules (original farm house owner was grandfathered into the subdivision because one of her driveway exits opened on to the subdivision main street) prohibited metal swing sets -- they wanted only fancy wooden climbing apparatuses visible in the subdivision. You know, the kind with the canvas tents on top and the plastic slides. My friend counter sued and won -- cost the homeowners assn. $50,000 in atty. fees and the judge sent them home!
Another area around here is always complaining about the geese and the deer. Well, I've got news. The geese and the deer were here long before the people. They sure don't bother me. I have plenty of grass and bushes they can chew on. (I do get irritated with groundhogs and raccoons, however.)
You enter into covenants voluntarily when you buy a piece of property. Similarly, you know about zoning laws when you buy a property, so you are consenting to those rules, too.
It's nice to say that zoning is evil, but the alternative is allowing construction to occur without taking into account population densities, the ability of infrastructure to handle the new development, the effect such development will have on neighboring properties etc.
