Kerry Hires Joe Lockhart to Combat Swift Boat Veterans
MSNBC 'First Read' Political Insider Memo ^ | 8/20/04 | Liz Wilner

Posted on 08/20/2004 7:41:15 AM PDT by gopwinsin04

The Los Angeles Times notes this morning that he Kerry campaign has hired former Clinton White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart and Joel Johnson, a lobbyist who worked for President Clinton to help respond to the Swift Boat Veteran's attacks.

Group officials who discuss strategy on condition of anonymity said that the anti-Kerry group plans to hammer the Democrat for his war claims and protests after he left Vietnam, especially his claims that US soldiers committed war crimes.

The group are also arranging local veterans to criticize Kerry when he vists their states.

Aides said Kerry has been flooded with calls from concerned veterans, and a CBS poll released last night showed the senator losing significant support amongst those who served in the armed forces.

Instead of rebutting each charge, Kerry blamed Bush for sanctioning such highly personal attacks, though there is no evidence that the presdients campaign has any direct connections to the anti-Kerry group.

Boston Globe[Page two of the article] *******"I personally miscalculated," said Paul Nace, who has worked closely with Kerry in his campaigns since 1970. "There were a number of us who were following it closely and trying to measure it and you don't want to react and give a story more legs than it is entitled to. But when it became clear the story did have legs -- once I reached the conclusion it wasn't going to blow over -- I did express the opinion that we have to respond."

So Nace began talking with a small group of Kerry friends known as the dog hunters. It was in 1984 that the dog hunters first organized. Kerry's Democratic primary opponent, James Shannon, had said during a televised debate that if Kerry, who became a leading critic of the war after he returned from Vietnam, "felt that strongly about the war, you would not have gone." Kerry responded that Shannon was insulting veterans, adding, "That dog won't hunt." A group of Vietnam veterans rallied to Kerry's side and became known as the dog hunters, helping Kerry in subsequent races, including in 1996, when questions were firest raised about Kerry's Silver Star. Now the dog hunters, including Nace, were mobilized for another battle at Kerry's side.***

Great. The return of the Bug-eyed moron.

For some reason, the movie "The Deer Hunter" popped into my head.

I suppose it's because Joe so often looks like a deer caught in your headlights,
but I don't know whether it's an appropriate parallel to the movie or not.
The movie presented such an unrealisticly bleak perspective of the Pittsburgh area
that I found it boring, and could never watch more than 5~10 minutes of the darn thing.

Same here! They are going to need all the support they can get with the Democrat attack machine kicking into high gear.

The Kerry campaign is disastrous for the Dems and someone's gotta be a hero.....

Toricelli/Lautenberg.

Wellstone/Mondale.

We're staring to see it with McGreevey.

Who still controls The Party? Who still commands the soccer moms? Who might the Party pick who can still pull off a win against Bush?

BEHOLD THE MESSIAH!

Came back to computer to post latest I'm hearing:

On Fox Major Garrett just played most of the newest ad and said one of the POWs in the ad was a McCain supporter in 2000 (Oops, there goes the "this was the same group working AGAINST McCain at Bush's behest").

Also this man supporter Mark Warner, a dem, when he ran.

I'm sorry--I didn't write down the name as I was in the other room but Garrett will surely repeat this information later, so keep an ear out everybody.

David Corn on the ad: Misleading as Kerry was testifying to secondhand information. Ookaay.....then why was his testimony deemed worthy of testimony before a Senate committee, hmmmmmmmmmmm?

Corn was losing it during the exchange...shrill, Republican attack, blah blah blah

Back to housework for me.

Edwards/HRC? HRC/Edwards? I don't think I gave some people enough credit on those early threads - they thought no matter what happened, Hillary would be the candidate. All the chess pieces are going into place...we make fun of Lockhart but he only has to be in long enough to get her through the transition. Now is absolutely not the time to sit back; the SwiftVet ads are devastating but maybe too devastating. She's timing this to the very end; who thought she'd ever be the senator of NY? The crowd will go wild. If we thought Florida 2000 was a bitch, hang on.
