PRUDHOE BAY, Alaska — Just mentioning "ANWR" (search) and oil drilling in the same breath is bound to touch off a controversy.

But the governor of Alaska says it's a non-issue because he plans to search for oil on state land just off the shore from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"We are a sovereign state and we have this authority and I hope we find a big puddle down there," Murkowski said.

But don't they have to ask the UN and France first?/sarcasm off

Seriously, I can't wait to see what this does when they hit the biggest oil field in American history and the fact that there's no wildlife even around there means that there is no downside.

I understand that ANWR is as barren as the surface of the North Pole. The lefties show the rolling lush green fields of Alaska for brainwashing the LIB/envirowacco base!

I've seen videos taken from ANWR: THERE'S NOTHING THERE!

No trees, no grass, no WILDLIFE; just dirt and snow.

The oil workers will just have to be very careful not to pee in the snow, or else global warming could escalate too rapidly and send the world's eco-system into catastrophy./sarcasm off

Can the Feds or courts stop Murkowski from doing this? (I hope not).

I was on the DEW Line in 1969-70 and saw the caribou migration as they came down from the Brooks Range where they wintered. The coastal plane is not barren. As soon as the spring thaw occurs the riotous growth of wild flowers, lichens, grasses and animal life is truly magnificent.

BTAIM, the development of Prudhoe Bay has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that oil exploration and exploitation can be accomplished without environmental impact. The caribou herds have thrived since the Alaska Oil Pipeline has provided refuge to the wintering herds. How you ask! since the oil is 300 degrees fahrenheit when extracted. the pipeline was elevated since to bury it would damage the permafrost! The caribou learned to stand under the pipeline to stay warm. More calves survive and we get the oil while the herds have tripled in size over the last 30 years!

With oil prices at $48.70 a barrel, I can't believe House and Senate Republicans haven't pushed for drilling in ANWR. If it passes, it will be a great victory, and if the Democrats block it, it will be a great issue for President Bush, House and Senate Republican candidates and, most especially, Senator Lisa Murkowski, who is facing a strong challenge from former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles.

Not really. But offshore drilling was announced several months ago, so this isn't really news.

i>The nearest tree is about 150 miles south of Deadhorse.

The farthest north tree was assassinated just a few days ago.

The Greenies have stepped into it here. I'm sure that the the waters off ANWR are much more environmentally sensitive than the barren ground where the drilling was first intended. And since it is State land the Federal Government has little oversight.

I can't believe House and Senate Republicans haven't pushed for drilling in ANWR.

Sometimes I fear they prefer a keeping campaign issue alive, more than addressing our nations security.
