The explosions from the bombing, that went on for more than 30 minutes, were loudly heard several km (miles) away. For credibility sake, Reuter's ought to subscribe to Jane's publications, or hire somebody who knows something about military hardware.
"Bombing" should most likely read "Shelling" -- although it is possible for the AC-130 crew to lean out a window and throw bombs at those on the ground. LOL

What's with the 'suspected'. It should be pretty easy to spot an AC-130 gunship! Were they disguised as a J3 Cub or maybe an old Aeronca Champ? Having never heard one on the attack I can't believe there would be mistaking the sound of its turbojet engines and weaponry that fires thousands of rounds of ammunition a minute. I can't think of anything else that would sound like that and would native to Najaf!
