Unwilling Participants: Iraqi soccer players angered by Bush campaign ads featuring team

PATRAS, Greece -- Iraqi midfielder Salih Sadir scored a goal here on Wednesday night, setting off a rousing celebration among the 1,500 Iraqi soccer supporters at Pampeloponnisiako Stadium. Though Iraq -- the surprise team of the Olympics -- would lose to Morocco 2-1, it hardly mattered as the Iraqis won Group D with a 2-1 record and now face Australia in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Afterward, Sadir had a message for U.S. president George W. Bush, who is using the Iraqi Olympic team in his latest re-election campaign advertisements.

In those spots, the flags of Iraq and Afghanistan appear as a narrator says, "At this Olympics there will be two more free nations -- and two fewer terrorist regimes."

"Iraq as a team does not want Mr. Bush to use us for the presidential campaign," Sadir told SI.com through a translator, speaking calmly and directly. "He can find another way to advertise himself."

Would this be an appropriate place to state that I hope Austrailia kicks their sorry collective ass into a trash bin?

One can only imagine how the question was framed to illicit this type of response.

Excellent point. I'm sure this Iraqi soccer player didn't call a press conference to express his indignation. He was set up to elict that response.

The Lefties do not miss a beat do they. If a team member was to praise President Bush for liberating Iraq, what are the odds of it being printed.

Maybe, but no matter the circumstance he can shove this opinion. President Bush is responsible for His freedom, no one has more of a right to take credit for the reality they will not be tortured when they return home.

Manajid, 22, who nearly scored his own goal with a driven header on Wednesday, hails from the city of Fallujah. He says coalition forces killed Manajid's cousin, Omar Jabbar al-Aziz, who was fighting as an insurgent, and several of his friends. In fact, Manajid says, if he were not playing soccer he would "for sure" be fighting as part of the resistance.

Essentially, they interviewed family members of terrorists.

Some things are timeless...

Take up the White Man's burden--
Send forth the best ye breed--
Go bind your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness,
On fluttered folk and wild--
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half-devil and half-child.

Take up the White Man's burden--
In patience to abide,
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple,
An hundred times made plain
To seek another's profit,
And work another's gain.

Take up the White Man's burden--
The savage wars of peace--
Fill full the mouth of Famine
And bid the sickness cease;
And when your goal is nearest
The end for others sought,
Watch sloth and heathen Folly
Bring all your hopes to nought.

Take up the White Man's burden--
No tawdry rule of kings,
But toil of serf and sweeper--
The tale of common things.
The ports ye shall not enter,
The roads ye shall not tread,
Go mark them with your living,
And mark them with your dead.

Take up the White Man's burden--
And reap his old reward:
The blame of those ye better,
The hate of those ye guard--
The cry of hosts ye humour
(Ah, slowly!) toward the light:--
"Why brought he us from bondage,
Our loved Egyptian night?"

Take up the White Man's burden--
Ye dare not stoop to less--
Nor call too loud on Freedom
To cloke (1) your weariness;
By all ye cry or whisper,
By all ye leave or do,
The silent, sullen peoples
Shall weigh your gods and you.

Take up the White Man's burden--
Have done with childish days--
The lightly proferred laurel, (2)
The easy, ungrudged praise.
Comes now, to search your manhood
Through all the thankless years
Cold, edged with dear-bought wisdom,
The judgment of your peers!

Kipling

So, he was happier when Hussein was running things? Maybe he enjoyed the torture?

I'm sure they did -- to appear objective.

They didn't print them -- because they aren't objective.

Sorry about that. Al Sadr can go straight to H.ll, but Sadir can tag right along with him. It's true, he be UDay's shredder fodder if we hadn't killed the murderous creep.

Excellent point. I'm sure this Iraqi soccer player didn't call a press conference to express his indignation. He was set up to elict that response.

But of course, the doping scandals and the incredible performances will get old fast, so they must go digging up/leading people into creating stories where there are none.

I could ask any of those players - "if your image was directly used in an ad for George Bush, implying that you supported him, and you found out that some in your country (that may not even be from Iraq) would consider you traitors to Iraq and harass or harm you or your family because of this, would you want your image to be used in that ad"? You can imagine the response would easily be "no, I don't want our image used in ads for George Bush".

One more reason to root for the Aussies this Sunday. I hope they decimate the Iraqi team.
