Keyes won't back down on reparations
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 8/19/04 | SCOTT FORNEK

Posted on 08/19/2004 5:27:04 AM PDT by kattracks

His voice rising to a yell, Republican U.S. Senate nominee Alan Keyes told a bipartisan civic group Wednesday he "will not budge" from his belief that descendants of slaves should be exempted from income taxes to help heal the wounds of past discrimination and segregation.

The former presidential candidate disdainfully brushed aside questions over whether his suggestion should apply to rich African Americans such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan or Oprah Winfrey.

"Do you know how many Oprah Winfreys there might have been running around in the 1930s or in the 1920s or in the 19-teens that got nowhere because the doors were shut in their face?" Keyes thundered. "If you think that because I wear a conservative label, I have forgotten that history and am not mindful of that injustice -- then I will tell you now that you are wrong."

Keyes delivered his blistering defense at a luncheon of the City Club of Chicago, scolding fellow conservatives who challenged his proposal and evoking the struggle of his African-American parents, saying they had talent and "hearts and spirit and strength and faith."

"Why didn't they get to a point where they could stand on this platform?" Keyes aked.

Vying against Democrat Barack Obama, Keyes drew heat from conservatives earlier this week when he proposed exempting descendants of slaves from income taxes for a generation or two, a view he insists "involves a traditionally Republican, conservative and market-oriented approach."

On Wednesday, Keyes ridiculed the fuss over his position, saying it is simply a tax break, something "Republicans and my conservative brethren" don't object to when applied to a "wealthy corporation."

Conservative activist Jack Roeser met with Keyes for what Roeser called "a long argument and an intense one" over the issue before the speech. A Barrington businessman, Roeser said he still is not sold on Keyes' reparations proposal, but still plans to support him anyway. "I will tell my friends that this is a good man, and we should support him."

it will bring civil war should it ever be enacted or pursued.

The Alan Taliban (The "Alaban"? Hmmm...) is either blinded to that obvious fact, or, they think it's a small price to pay for upholding their Prophet's message, and attacking the infidels.

Until, oh, gee, what was it, all of TWO DAYS AGO? Until then, it was pretty much the accepted wisdom that "reparations" were a scheme concocted by left wing race-baiters, for the purpose of stirring up their partisan rabble (the double-digit IQ crowd), and, blackmailing the rest of the country, i.e., "you give us this, this, this, and this, or else we push really hard for 'reparations', dig?"

Anyone with the proverbial pair of synapses to rub together knew that "reparations" can never happen, precisely for the reason you gave above.

They are a non-starter, because they are a guaranteed stopper -- of the country.

Until two days ago, it was only those on the far left, who didn't think that destroying the country was a bad idea, who pushed this marxist insanity.

Now, it's a whole different madness that's descended on the land. And it's scary.

People are playing with fire, and they're either too stupid to realize it, or, too blinded by their cult mentality and obedience to their Prophet.

The more I think about it, the more I conclude that the "taliban" metaphor is chillingly accurate.

Keyes is prepared to tear down the country if he can't get what he wants.

Keyes can't get what he wants.

What happens from this point forth?

I think I don't want to think about that. At least not now. I'm still kinda in shock from it all.

Why WE must support Alan Keyes:
1) Barack Obama has been annointed by the media and the Democrats as a "future star" in the Democrat party.
2) The national Republican Party will be watching to see if the public will vote pro-life.
3) The national GOP will be watching to see if party activists will send money to an "extreme Conservative."
4) If Alan Keyes does better than expected, we will get more Conservative, Pro-Life, Pro-Constitution candidates in the future.
5) If Alan Keyes does worse than expected, we will get more pro-choice, "liberal" Arlen Specter-type candidates.
6) Obama voted to defend "live-birth abortion" (Allowing babies born alive during botched abortions to die from lack of care.) Hillary and Ted Kennedy wouldn't even vote for this. If this is not a winning issue, the GOP can take "pro-life" off the table as an issue.
7) The national media will be waiting for the opportunity to claim that Republicans are racist and will not vote for a black man.
8) The media knocked Jack Ryan out of the race. A bigger victory for Obama over Keyes than would have happened versus Ryan will reward them and encourage more of the same against other GOP candidates. An improved showing in IL by the GOP will punish the media for trashing Ryan. If Ryan was your man, avenge him by supporting Keyes.
9) Supporting Keyes in IL will help Bush win IL.
10) It will indicate that the GOP is made up of people who can intelligently debate ideas (slavery, reparations, tax cuts, freedom) and support someone who makes an attempt to debate ideas. If Keyes is shunned for being willing to debate ideas, we will only be rewarded with more bland, packaged candidated who spout platitudes.
11) Obama or Keyes? Who do you want voting on the next several Supreme Court nominees?

12) Everything you don't like about Keyes, you'll get more of from Obama. One of these two men WILL be the next Senator from Illinois.

Shouldn't be any need to 'win over folks' here, at this stage of an election.

Right. You're still in the "driving them away on a wholesale basis" phase of the operation.

The fact that you think there supposedly should be says tons about you.

Wow.

Unreal...

Were I IN illinois I would pull alan's lever just to tweak the obama pukes. But alan is NOT dealing with straigh "r" voters on this issue, he's dealing with fiscal conservatives, independents, and hang on... WHITE, CONSERVATIVE, CHRISTIAN, FARM OWNERS in central and southern illinois who don't have a racist bone in their bodies.

And they are NOT happy one bit.

Well, the Alaban (the Alan Taliban) will simply have to bash them into submission, won't they.

A few (thousand?) screaming accusations of "hatred", "racism" (LOL!), and various and sundry threats ought to do the job, right?

If not, they can just keep on upping the volume until those people relent, come out of their houses, and say "Yes, we were wrong, we must obey the Prophet Keyes, we WILL vote for Prophet Al Keyes. We must submit. Selah."

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Beat them over the head until they submit.

It's working like a charm here, isn't it?

*sigh*

The silence is deafening, isn't it.

Amazing how it can flipflop from ten thousand decibels of "TRAITOR!" to total silence in the space of a nanosecond.

I don't defend everything EV says but he was CLEARLY nowhere NEAR calling for opposition to Bush. You may be right about this being a bad plan - even maexist...but EV has you dead to rights if you aren't man enough to call it Marxist when Bush does it too.

Doesn't mean we have to withdraw our support from Bush - or keyes.

Which was his POINT.

bumpersticker I saw...
"farmers can do it while using pitchforks... city boyz"

ticking off the farmers, when that is the only conservative base in the state... like another freeper said moments ago...
keyes is so "brilliant".

yes. yes he is.
blindingly so.
just look at his dazed disciples.
eyes all glazed over mumbling "brilliant, brilliant, brilliant"

kinda like in the book by herbert "DUNE".

If you think this is only about Alan winning, then you really are about as sharp as a bag of marbles...

The different levels of significance in this campaign are very fascinating...or did you forget that the GOP House Leadership Denny Hastert (R-IL) wholeheartidly endorses Amb. Keyes? There's an abolition OF THE IRS GESTAPO underfoot, but even with crayons and a big board, you still wouldn't figure it out. Even if you wanted to, which I don't believe you do...

Does Keyes advocate reparations to other minorities such as the white working poor whose struggle to survive is just the same as those of poor blacks? Should we also pay reparations whether through cash or tax-breaks to other so-called minority groups whose ancestors have suffered hardships? Should we give the land back to the Indians and California back to Mexico?

We Californians appreciate that you didn't give Dr. Keyes the Aztecs as an option.

With his slave-descendents tax break reparation proposal, Alan Keyes has positioned himself on the far side of Pat Buchanan on the field of relevancy.

Too bad. I voted for Keyes in the '96 primary. The bright side is that we don't ever have to take him seriously again. The dark side is that, like Buchanan, Keyes will nail it once in a while, but pointlessly, because they are frothy and fringey, like Nader and Kucinich, and even when they are serious, no one will take them seriously.

I always thought that we had a tacit gentleman's agreement in this country. The unconstitutional 14th Amendment (1868) deprived slave owners of any compensation for their property, and in return, slaves would not ask for reparations/40 acres.

Well, then OK, I see room for a compromise here that will satisfy everyone.

We give the "descendants of the slaves" (i.e., anyone with the classical "one drop of negro blood") 40 acres and a mule, and we give the "descendants of the slave owners" (i.e., "everyone else" other than the "descendants of the slaves") "compensation for their property", in the form of gold coinage equal to the market value of a college educated black adult, i.e., (ballpark average) $65,000 a year times 35 years productive life = $2,275,000.00, in gold bullion coins.

OK, is everybody happy?

Oh, we'll need to work out some way to pay for those coins, of course. Perhaps a "fair share" tax on mules, and on parcels sized at 1/16th of a section?

After that, we can finally have the f'n race war that the IDIOTS seem to be dead set on getting, and then after the dust settles, we can pick up the pieces and start over again.

Good grief.

FYI:

Scan the appropriate threads and you'll find virtually ALL of Keyes' "supporters" have said that they, too, think he's wrong on this.

So just maybe they are bashing the anti-Keyes crowd for some OTHER reason?
(note for the record i don't mean YOU when I say "anti-keyes crowd" I take on good faith your claim to have been a supporter up until now)

AGAIN just for emphesis - I see NO ONE on this thread claiming this is a GOOD idea. Claiming that the "Taliban" (gotta say, you aren't sounding much like a guy who just quit keyes yesterday at this point) isn't claiming that it's a good plan, at MOST they are disputing the characterization of it as "Marxist."

They just might be wrong about that, but they are clearly not calling it a GOOD plan.

Rather loose use of the term, there, friend.

baloney.

the laws bush signed were passed by republican majorities in both houses and signed into law by a republican. you think the republican party is marxist? and you think this race based tax plan of alan's is approved by the republican majority? Think again pal. It's against everything fiscal conservatism stands for.

And fwiw alan's race based tax program is NOTHING like a loan guarantee for minorities trying to buy a house. Loans are paid back. Taxes once redistributed via government services to blacks who will NOT pay taxes under alan's seventy year plan, are never coming back to the tax payer... in this case the poor stupid NON BLACK who drools over alans holy utterances like pavlov's dog.

It's not a double standard, becaue these are two entirely different kinds of items... one has to do with loan guarantees and the other is directly about this "mostly white guy's" taxes.

completely different things altogether. taxes on whitey are not the same as evil loan guarantees to minorities and working poor.

so the double standard accusation from the keyesters though expected is a totally false comparison.

But hey if it's cool with the aliban members... it must be true conservatism... Hugo Chavez and his boliverian circle friends in Venezuela will agree with him... they deserve and are preparing to extract their 'reparations' from the evil capilatlist majority in their nation too... and being quite religious down there, and wanting social justice to flow, they are quite pro-life too... ah yess, social justice...

unless of course you happen to be one of the capitalist pigs... repressing the poor minorities... by resisting the upcoming forced redistribution of wealth, marxist style.

unbelievable what a infinitesmal number folks will turn a deaf ear to, just in the name of alan.

pass me the keyesaid I want some of what you guys are drinking...
