His voice rising to a yell, Republican U.S. Senate nominee Alan Keyes told a bipartisan civic group Wednesday he "will not budge" from his belief that descendants of slaves should be exempted from income taxes to help heal the wounds of past discrimination and segregation. The former presidential candidate disdainfully brushed aside questions over whether his suggestion should apply to rich African Americans such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan or Oprah Winfrey.
"Do you know how many Oprah Winfreys there might have been running around in the 1930s or in the 1920s or in the 19-teens that got nowhere because the doors were shut in their face?" Keyes thundered. "If you think that because I wear a conservative label, I have forgotten that history and am not mindful of that injustice -- then I will tell you now that you are wrong."
Keyes delivered his blistering defense at a luncheon of the City Club of Chicago, scolding fellow conservatives who challenged his proposal and evoking the struggle of his African-American parents, saying they had talent and "hearts and spirit and strength and faith."
"Why didn't they get to a point where they could stand on this platform?" Keyes aked.
Vying against Democrat Barack Obama, Keyes drew heat from conservatives earlier this week when he proposed exempting descendants of slaves from income taxes for a generation or two, a view he insists "involves a traditionally Republican, conservative and market-oriented approach."
On Wednesday, Keyes ridiculed the fuss over his position, saying it is simply a tax break, something "Republicans and my conservative brethren" don't object to when applied to a "wealthy corporation."
Conservative activist Jack Roeser met with Keyes for what Roeser called "a long argument and an intense one" over the issue before the speech. A Barrington businessman, Roeser said he still is not sold on Keyes' reparations proposal, but still plans to support him anyway. "I will tell my friends that this is a good man, and we should support him."
So, it's "marxist" when Keyes does it, and it's NOT marxist when Bush does it? With all due respect, you're a little coockoo. You are not a logician. So I recommend Irving Copi's logic text for your needs.
Get a grip. Keyes is a whacko in the same vein as Sharpton. Do you really want someone like that representing us?
"You'd attack Christian conservatives in any case, any time of the election season. You've already proved that."
Your ability to judge character is a joke.
Shouldn't be any need to 'win over folks' here, at this stage of an election. The fact that you think there supposedly should be says tons about you.
Do you think christian conservatives support race based home loans? (a-hem)
Yes. Unlike FR's resident Obama supporters.
Bush is not the same as the yet unelected hand "alan keyes". Trying to compare the two is like trying to compare a statesman, to a church house dog catcher elect, pandering for votes from a constituency that will NEVER give him the twitch of a lever.
Were I IN illinois I would pull alan's lever just to tweak the obama pukes. But alan is NOT dealing with straigh "r" voters on this issue, he's dealing with fiscal conservatives, independents, and hang on... WHITE, CONSERVATIVE, CHRISTIAN, FARM OWNERS in central and southern illinois who don't have a racist bone in their bodies.
And they are NOT happy one bit.
And I am concerned they will change registration over our putting this so called "conservative" on the ticket. Morally, I think he is a GREAT Christian in how he lives his life, and seeks to do right.
But, fiscally this is an ANTI conservative tax proposal that even Eternal Vigilance... admittedly Alan's most consistent backer here... questions.
On that E.V. and I would agree.
I think alan needs to relent, in order to get his base back on track. Some folks think he doesn't have to, I guess.
Oh well.
I get your "double standard" accusation, but the two guys are different totally, and Keyes is in no way Bush's caliber, has no elected experience and does not have the poltical smarts. Great debator, lousy politician.
Bush is smart in compomising to get overall conservative goals in place. But he never compromises to the point his constituency abandons the party for the libertarian candidate... of course not.
This "tax based on race thing" of alan's calls his "smartness" into question, with a whole lotta folks. Not just robert the "rino". And it could cost him some votes, that until yesterday were proverbially "in the bag."
Like I said, I would vote for him, but am not registered there. Family members, "r's" who are, will not... based on this tax thing.
A simple retraction would suffice. But alan won't do it, I guess.
You complain non-stop that people trash Keyes.
I defy you to link ONE PLACE anybody has called Keyes OR you for that matter a traitor?
So, like I said, it's marxist when Keyes does, but it's not Marxist when Bush does it? BTW, I think Keyes was wrong to do it. But, I also think your DOUBLE STANDARD is wrong.
you got a problem with bush regarding your homeloan???
sorry pal but those are not my federal income taxes.
race based federal tax schemes ain't on my list of items to be enacted.
as far as I am concerned, home loan guarantees are not the same thing as federal taxes based on race.
perhaps there is something that banks are doing that discriminates against minorities that needs to be addressed on a federal law level... that is not marxist redistribution of taxes based on race.
apples are not oranges.
nobody here wants obama to win.
we want alan to retract his ridiculous scheme and consolidate his base so he can run more effectively...
however, since he is committed to losing based on the principle of redistribution of wealth based on race... it seems apparent that it is NOT going to happen.
Alan, himself will end up driving off his base and electing the enemy... not the folk who asked alan to reconsider his ridiculous reparations scheme.
Stop blaming conservative Christians for alan's mistakes.
Yes. Unlike FR's resident Obama supporters.
Please name the Obama supporters here.
I can't find one, not even non-sequiter
or whatever his name.
sorry pal but those are not my federal income taxes.
Neither is the money that Keyes wants blacks to be able to keep, goofy.
race based federal tax schemes ain't on my list of items to be enacted.
Letting people keep their own money is a "tax scheme"?? You sound like AlGore!
Sorry; you'll have to take a number.
I'm currently in line to get EV to find some links where anybody has called the Keyes people traitors.
It is MOST important to reelect bush.
Alan... is not even elected yet.
We need to keep the white house.
Alan is not important to our national security.
yes Alan's plan is marxist in redistrbution and the bills passed by this currently republican congress, regarding home loans, and signed into law by our President are not.
loans are not taxes.
loan guarantees are even less so.
loans are repaid. taxes are not usually, unless you get a GREAT man like W. who works to get tax rebates back to us.
duh.
Alan wants to take even more away from non-blacks to support his black brothers.
Bush wants to give it back to EVERY BODY.
and did so for every tax payer.
they are NOTHING alike.
alan is done, stick the fork in him if he does not repent his position.... and I doubt he will. He's stubbornly arrogant and it has caused him to lose EVERY election he has ever run in...
This is yet another difference between unelected-alan, and multi-elected bush. Pride and prejudice, vs. equality and color blindness.
It's not like apples and oranges.
It's more like computers vs. sand shovels for kids.
Well dang.
I only asked for the names of Obama's supporters,
I didn't know we also had "traitors in our midst."
and who is going to pay the blacks 'fair share' whilst they opt out... oh dense one?
the non blacks.
we pay more, if they pay less.
the nation's responsibilities don't go away for the rest of us when an entire race gets to hop in the wagon while we push.
they get to USE the infrastructures of our nation, without paying, whilst we non blacks pay double for them...
you cannot possibly be that stupid.
it's stubborn obstinance.
Alan is wrong tame.
And unless he relents he is toast.
you better believe it's wrong.
it will bring civil war should it ever be enacted or pursued.
I think somebody called luis a "gay traitor" last night, but it was not E.V., EV called us traitors on this thread I think.
race based tax schemes sound like racism and marxism to me...
glad YOU support them, it paints you well.
