Sarasota principal defends Bush from "Fahrenheit 9/11" portrayal

By Associated Press June 24, 2004

SARASOTA — Michael Moore's film "Fahrenheit 9/11" criticizes President Bush for listening to Sarasota second-graders read a story for nearly seven minutes after learning the nation was under attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

But Gwendolyn Tose'-Rigell, the principal at Emma E. Booker Elementary School, says Bush handled himself properly.

"I don't think anyone could have handled it better," Tose'-Rigell told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in a story published Wednesday. "What would it have served if he had jumped out of his chair and ran out of the room?"

Isn't it interesting that no one in the national news media bothered to counter Moore's F911 "7 minutes" charges with the story of the school principal (a Democrat) who was actually in the room with President Bush.

How many times have we heard that it was President Bush reading to the children? When it was not he, but the teacher who was reading to the children at that time.

They can't even get the most basic of facts, which are on film for everyone to see right!

I must be missing the place in the story that states she is a Democrat.

It was in an earlier article. She voted for Gore but said she would have voted for Bush that day based on his actions.

My view of what was whispered into the president's ear:

"Mr. President- all security arrangements are in order. In seven minutes we must leave"

Sorry, Dennis Prager did a feature on the article. I guess it was on his show I learned about her political preference.

President Bush exhibited true calm and courage in remaining with the children for those very brief minutes. He demonstrated confidence in his staff which obviously had to make a lot of adjustments in a short period of time to get him out of there.

Upon receiving news like that whispered in his ear, he had to know that the potential for him to be in danger personally would be very high.

I can just imagine Gore jumping under a kindergatner's desk re-enacting the 'duck and cover' drill from his youth.

And I can imagine Michael Moore having to stop by the restroom to change his wet pants.

Moore was popping popcorn while watching the towers fall, all giddy with excitement.

I'm thinking that at the time, there was concern that people might panic. Whether Bush sitting there calmly prevented the panic or not, it doesn't matter. Panic would have cost far more than 3000 lives.

It was the right thing to do, and what else could he have done? His staff was gathering information, and he would have wasted his 7 minutes outside in the hallway waiting for it to arrive.

Here's what I always ask the fruits that subject me to their "7 minute" rhetoric.

"What in the hell was he supposed to do? Draw a pistol and take to the skies in Air Force One randomly looking for terrorist?"

On one hand they argue that he was too hasty (didn't give inspectors enough time in Iraq), then on the other hand they bitch because he didn't ricochet out of his chair and bolt for the door "Kramer" from Seinfeld - as if it would have made one iota of difference.

The people that harp about 7 minutes are irrational demagogues. From now on, my response to such fools will be simple - a lighting fast jab to their ignoble stomachs.

not having seen f911, I have a question about that portion of the "show"

did it just show Bush sitting in silence for the 7 minutes or were there voice overs?

"Mr. President- all security arangements are in order. In seven minutes we must leave"

do you have any proof of that statement?
i've heard it a few times, it makes total sense. if the pres was in danger in that school they would have taken him to cover, but he obviously wasnt. but i would love to hear the whisperer (was it andrew card?) to tell us the nature of the whisper.
i'm sure he couldnt divulge and secret password type of information but the nature would be interesting to hear.

I'm not sure of the facts, can you help me out?

The teacher is reading and someone comes into the classroom and says in Bush's ear...

"I don't think anyone could have handled it better,"

Seems like an honest assessment. To the point.

While the screams of a few get the headlines, there is an unseen tidal wave of support among us "average" folk that won't be seen until election day.

I can imagine Kerry shooting one of the un-armed children in the back as they ran away. (/sarcasm)

"What would it have served if he had jumped out of his chair and ran out of the room?"

Exactly. Never mind that at minute 1, no one, not even Moore, knew about the second plane or that it was a terrorist attack. No one knew what was happening so Bush, like the rest of us, had to wait those few minutes to actually realize we were being attacked. Sure, jump up and scare not only the children but get pounced on by the frenzied media so he couldn't leave and handle the business of taking care of the nation. This needs to get publicized far and wide.

Correct. Basically (and I am sure you have seen film of this), Bush is listening to the teacher as she reads to students. Andy Card comes upto President Bush, leans down and whispers in his ear (exactly what I don't think has ever been revealed).

Well, I can assure you I made it up. I said it was my opinion.

If someone else was as enlightened, I would not be surprised.

Further on that. The RATS and Bush haters, for 3 years now have said "President Bush just kept reading to the children." Bush wasn't reading! They can not even get the most basic and simple of facts correct.
