They did this, absolutely. But the civilians were Germans, not Polish. The Poles suffered massive deportation to the Eastern part of the country (and to concentration camps, too) to make place for Aryan "settlers" (I think it was the official terminology), under Hitler's plan to make Eastern Europe the new German motherland.
From what I understand, at the liberation of Auschwitz, the American troops were so disgusted that the locals didn't do anything about the attrocities, they made the locals clean up the mess.
