"People of Faith" Ask: How Would Jesus Vote?

AUSTIN - Just a few miles from George W. Bush's former office at the state Capitol, a panel of religious experts Tuesday weighed a question with relevance to many people of faith: How would Jesus vote?

It's a complex question that can't be boiled down to simple political terms, say religious leaders who attended a Texas Faith Network conference in Austin.

But at least one conference speaker - James C. Moore, co-author of "Bush's Brain: How Karl Rove Made George Bush Presidential" - said he knew exactly how Jesus would vote.

"If ever there were a bleeding-heart liberal, it was Jesus Christ," Moore said. "I think the carpenter from Galilee was the original Democrat."

Moore drew laughter and applause from a moderate to left-leaning crowd of about 250 clergy and lay leaders who met at Congregation Agudas Achim synagogue.

Many at the conference voiced concerns that the religious right dominates discussions of faith and morality in politics. They complained that issues such as abortion and gay marriage seem to take priority over hunger, corporate crime and even the war in Iraq.

Some research has found that white Christians who attend worship services at least once a week are far more likely to vote Republican, while less frequent worshippers and those who are not religious tend to lean Democratic. Many analysts have criticized Democrats for failing to more effectively reach religious voters.

"The sound bites and the headlines have co-opted people of faith," said the Rev. Tom Heger, pastor of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Manchaca, south of Austin. "It would be a surprise to a lot of folks to discover that there are some very faithful, regular church attendees who aren't going to vote for Bush."

Of course the media just has to trot out a bunch of liberal hacks under the guise of "religious experts" none of whom probably have read the Bible since they were kids.

Did any of them bother to ask Him?

That reminds me of some disturbing somewhat off topic info i heard today on Medved. I assume the info comes from captured terrorists. Apparently there were large numbers of Canadians in the Afghan terror camps.

Most disturbing was the claim that terrorists were trying to infiltrate churches to attack as christians.

Unitarian Universalists . . . and black Americans of every denomination.

It all depends...If Jesus were a Jewish voter in West Palm Beach, Florida, he'd probably mistakenly vote for Buchanan.

Yes, I am sure Jesus was a burn-the-flag, marry-the-gays, raise-the-taxes and abort-the-babies Democrat.

These guys always say that Jesus was a liberal, who fought for the poor, and was all about love and forgiveness. Of course the problem with all of this is that its a canard that conservatives don't care about and advocate for the poor and don't practice love and forgiveness.

What they are really about is using such trite rhetoric to mask their far-left, clearly anti-Jesus/Christian agenda which includes gay marriage and abortion on demand, things that are out of the maintream of most Americans, let alone most Christians. That's why they decry the attention those two issues get -- because they are out of touch.

Its no different than when they say the Founding Fathers were 'radicals' and liberals; as if their 18th century liberalism in anyway transfers to today. The FFs would be spinning in their grave if they could see how the Dems have expanded the role of govt beyond anything authorized in the Constitution, and if they could see how the Left resorts to judicial activism to impose their most radical policies on the nation.

Some nut down the street from me has a "Jesus was a Liberal!" bumper sticker. I think those exact thoughts every time I pass his car.

You have two profiles of Jesus in the New Testament - one passive and meek, the other fiery and passionate.

Both profiles agree on one thing - that Jesus had a dim view of hypocrites.

That's the Jesus I root for.

Interesting.
I believe there's a passage about special torment for those who are charged with leading God's flock and don't follow his ways.
The parts these Leftists love are the "God is a Loving God".
They tend to miss that part about judgement that is everywhere also.
Do a study of how God treats his enemies who directly defy Him in the Old Testament.
He HUMILIATES and DESTROYS them. Our God is a jealous and Holy God.
You don't play spin games with the Almighty.
