Keyes has plans for reparations
Chicago Tribune ^ | 8/17/04 | Allison Benedikt and David Mendell

One day after their first meeting, U.S. Senate hopefuls Barack Obama and Alan Keyes were back on the campaign trail again Monday.

Speaking at a news conference at the Hotel InterContinental in Chicago, Republican Keyes added to his now familiar talking points his stance on slavery reparations.

Prompted by a reporter's question, Keyes gave a brief tutorial on Roman history and said that in regard to reparations for slavery, the U.S. should do what the Romans did: "When a city had been devastated [in the Roman empire], for a certain length of time--a generation or two--they exempted the damaged city from taxation."

Keyes proposed that for a generation or two, African-Americans of slave heritage should be exempted from federal taxes--federal because slavery "was an egregious failure on the part of the federal establishment." In calling for the tax relief, Keyes appeared to be reaching out to capture the black vote, something that may prove difficult to do, particularly after his unwelcome reception at the Bud Billiken Day Parade Saturday...

I was just trying to speak in the convoluted logic that everyone else is using. Do you want a serious answer?

"you believe once we've eliminate taxes on blacks, that eliminating taxes on all will surely follow?"

It CAN'T follow, that's just the point. But I want to hear the answer from Obama's camp. The only downside, and it's a big one, is seeing the machine rags in this way left state not press these issues with Obama. I support the Keyes candidacy because it will call Obama to task. No one else in the Illinois party could have done that without certain charges being levelled against them. This plan for reparations could never pass, and I sicerely believe Keyes knows it. But this campaign is all about the debate. Keyes has nothing to lose here. He can do this campaign on the cheap, even cheaper if he remains controversial. News coverage is free.

Jerry Kohn is throwing a major Libertarian principle overboard, and has done so from day one of his campaign from what I've been able to gather.

I've always known, once a politician throws one principle overboard, it makes all such future actions that much easier for them.

There you go. So much for your 'moral choice.'

It's a brilliant move.

Of course reparations in any form will never pass through congress. But by supprting it in this form, Keyes makes it pretty much a non-issue.

As brilliant as Bush saying he would sign CFR if it made it to his desk.

Boy that worked out well.

I think it is insidiously delicious too!

Only those that earn an income (i.e. work) will qualify. I can see a small business/entreprenurial boom happening.

And when their reparations tax dispensation is up, they won't be on the dem/lib tax and spend plantation anymore.

Shut down the yap about reparations, urban renewal, rising black entreprenurial class all in one swell foop (er, fell swoop). My Like It!

Not only that but all other races including whites will be crying for their tax's to be eliminated or reduced. It would be a good start towards weakening the Federal Government.

"Since this was the reparation, all the "level playing field" programs are now gone. No more set asides. No more contracts to special groups. No more affirmative action. No more pandering."

On what do base the conclusion that reparations will be the end of the hand outs?

Okay, so its settled. We get a mule and 40 acres for each black slave. The descendants get to split it.

That's an ideal, alright....

You're missing the point, as usual TigersEyes - Keyes had one position, then switched it - the carpetbagging thing, for example. Kohn, on the other hand has never claimed to have Pro-Choice principles, and then switched to Pro-Life. he's always espoused Pro-Life Principles.

That's the difference. Kohn is still a moral choice.

But somehow, I think you knew that. Nice try, though.

OK, I've got it...

The left wing extremists are feeding leading questions
to Keyes, and then twisting his responses in order to
SMEAR HIM !!!

Everything that's been said recently that sounded 'nuts'
was some dem reporter asking him leading questions

THEY"RE trying to identify Keyes to the undecided's
before he can do so himself. That and to divide
and conquer all of us.

Don't FORGET... OBAMA is an ISLAMIC muslim.

See they have to file to get their Big gobmet check.

And Keyes' statement forces Obama's hand on the issue.

Think about that for a minute.

Do you think Obama's position is more radical than Keyes'?

Would it have been made public without Keyes' statement?

It's a big conspiracy to paint Keyes out to be a nutjob?

I can see the secret backroom meetings of the Conspiracy To Get Keyes:

Super Secret Chairman: I call this meeting of The Conspiracy To get Keyes to order. First on the agenda, where we stand. Super Secret Minion 1, do you have an update?

Super Secret Minion 1: Well, Super Secret Chairman, we havn't had to do anything.

Super Secret Chairman: Why is that, Super Secret Minion 1?

Super Secret Minion 1: Well, sir, he seems to be doing ti himself. We don't even need to help!

Super Secret Chairman: Well, ok. Same as last week, then. Ok, no point in wasting time. We'll meet again next week. Meeting adjourned.

Do you know if there's an actual document for this? Someone on FOX once said that story is not true. I remember thinking "hmmmm", but never checked it out. It was some discussion about Al Sharpton. I can see where someone would make a deal like that for political or military gain, but I'd like to know for sure out of curiosity.

That's certainly something for someone to look into! Maybe someone with a knack for historical research.

Between you and me and the fencepost, in addition to what analysis and reflection the good doctor has done about this, I think he wanted to create a buzz about the fact that Obama the moneyed Kenyan-Hawaiian is hardly an "African-American" as Americans think of that demographic: descendant of American slaves.

Let's see how this is explicated and treated now, by AK.... Let's take a breath. ;->

Keyes was not targeting a specific Race of people

My understanding is that only people who can prove slave ancestry will be given the abatement.

The only convoluted logic I see is coming from the Keyes supporters. Maybe it has something to do with not giving serious answers.
