Keyes has plans for reparations
Chicago Tribune ^ | 8/17/04 | Allison Benedikt and David Mendell

One day after their first meeting, U.S. Senate hopefuls Barack Obama and Alan Keyes were back on the campaign trail again Monday.

Speaking at a news conference at the Hotel InterContinental in Chicago, Republican Keyes added to his now familiar talking points his stance on slavery reparations.

Prompted by a reporter's question, Keyes gave a brief tutorial on Roman history and said that in regard to reparations for slavery, the U.S. should do what the Romans did: "When a city had been devastated [in the Roman empire], for a certain length of time--a generation or two--they exempted the damaged city from taxation."

Keyes proposed that for a generation or two, African-Americans of slave heritage should be exempted from federal taxes--federal because slavery "was an egregious failure on the part of the federal establishment." In calling for the tax relief, Keyes appeared to be reaching out to capture the black vote, something that may prove difficult to do, particularly after his unwelcome reception at the Bud Billiken Day Parade Saturday...

What did you make up? Well, by ignoring the key words "African American" you made up the idea that Keyes was not targeting a specific Race of people. That was an untruth. He is targeting blacks, because he's pandering.

Don't like it? Take it up with Keyes.

We get a mule and 40 acres for each black slave. The descendants get to split it.

My wife and I have laughed over this very notion: there were more than 200 of us at my wife's family reunion this year - all descended from former slave Alexanderson Redding.

I can imagine all of those folk getting mad over a single mule....then getting even angrier over how to divvy up that mule...

OK, I'm thinking about the mechanics of this. As a smoke screen it is a great idea, even though I would not support it.

Let's see. If you can prove slave ancestors, you do not have to file a tax return for ten years. Instead you can file an exemption form. Those that are getting the credits no longer will (unless they file a return).

Assuming it passes the inevitable Supreme Court ruling on the equal protection clause (not very likely), then imagine what happens when the ten years are up.

Since this was the reparation, all the "level playing field" programs are now gone. No more set asides. No more contracts to special groups. No more affirmative action. No more pandering.

Oh, yes, and now you have some 12% of the population who you have to re-institute taxes on. Instant conservatives (wishful thinking, I'm sure).

Yes. And to think we were accused by the Keyesters of being liberals in disguise.

Oh, the irony...

I don't doubt that you pay your share nor do I doubt that the those you know pay their taxes. However, I just stated that the MAJORITY (as in 50% +1) of blacks, generally being poorer and taking lower paying jobs than the average American, pay no (or perhaps very little) income tax. Do you disagree with that?

The politicians, always trying to buy a vote, have fixed it to where damned near the majority of ALL AMERICANS pay no income tax ( http://www.house.gov/jec/press/2003/09-26-03b.htm ) to create a system of those who pay taxes and those who are given those taxes in order to guarantee a guaranteed base. When we reach the point where more people are on the take than making the payments, we are in trouble.

Clever - make that up all by yourself, or did your mommy help you?

Oh, and if Keyes gives you new tennis shoes and coveralls, and hands you another glass of Kool-Aid and tells you that the spaceship is coming to take you all on a Magic Comet Ride? Run.

No way. I'll just have to differ with Alan in this respect.

Excuse me, but we've been told for five years that Alan Keyes IS the real conservative, as opposed to us fake conservatives, so why should a person NOT assume that anything he discusses must be a real, true conservative value.

"And how do you feel about people whose ancestors never owned slaves paying the bill for the compensation you seek? That's just our tough luck, or what?"

Of course, because along with group rights comes group guilt. It's so much easier to make "society" guilty (as far as scamming for $$) then actually having to identify the perps and going through the legal system to gain justice.

Just make "society" the perp and call on the government to shell out the shekels.

I think we are all in favor of the debate this will cause. Section 2 of the 14th amendment raises an intersting spectre:

"Section 2. Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians (and ancestors of slaves for two generations)not taxed."

Will this need to be reworded. Is Keyes looking to deny Blacks representation? Another VRWC!

I think if we add up the $ that blacks have rec'd for welfare, free college tuition, gov't set-asides for small business, preferences for SBA loans, etc. there's no doubt the "reparations" have already been PAID IN FULL!

Alan Keyes proposal is pure bullcrap!

Here's the truth. Reparations would harm people who never owned slaves and reward people who never were slaves.

and you don't see that as basing it on skin color.

Just like YESTERDAY when Keyes said he was more black than Obama wasn't about race either!

It's very confusing, you see; mere mortals cannot possibly grasp the concept.

I knew this guy was a freak’n nut case.

During the early stages of Monica-Gate, this guy couldn’t stop focusing on the SEX. I was screaming at my TV, “It’s not the sex, It’s the perjury! You’re driving us into a trap!”

Now this. It’s been 5 generations since slavery, not “one or two”. The black community (if there is “one”) is at a disadvantage up because they are culturally deprived or features that bring success, not because they are overtaxed. Tax breaks for blacks will do nothing to help that. Tax breaks by race is antithetical to equality and liberty.

It don't matter, he's a republican and you support him or you are supporting Terrorists, UN loving Nazis, Socialists, big Government Liberals, US destroying commies.

Atleast that is what I have been reading since Vincente Bush was elected. But I did note the spike in excuse making for the RINOS when (r)nold decided to run for office.
