Bobby Fischer's Next Move
Mainichi News ^ | 8/17/04

Japan Chess Association President Miyoko Watai, left, listens to former world chess champion Bobby Fischer's attorney Masako Suzuki during a press conference in Tokyo.

Fischer, who has been held by Japanese immigration authorities for allegedly traveling with a revoked U.S. passport at Narita International Airport near Tokyo in July, has appealed to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to help him renounce U.S. citizenship as he announced plans to marry leading Japanese chess official Watai, Suzuki said.

Fischer, wanted in the United States for allegedly violating international sanctions on the former Yugoslavia, has been fighting attempts to have him deported to the United States.

Bobby Fischer is wanted for playing chess in 1992 in Yugoslavia. Although I think Bobby Fischer is pathetic, what will bringing him back to the states and trying him for playing chess will accomplish? No other participant or promoter will get charged? Are we going to through a tired, powerless dejected old man in prison for playing chess in Yugoslavia? I don’t like him for what he has said regarding 9/11, but this is not criminal.

We have Jesse Jackson who goes to Libya to have tea with Gaddalfi. We have Hollywoodites, like Spielberg and Oliver Stone, who constantly go to Cuba and smoke cigars with Fidel Castro. Nobody complains. My other concern, however, is with Japan’s tactics. They seem to want to keep Charles Jenkins, the North Korean defector who is married to a repatriated Japanese woman. Instead they will offer Bobby Fischer as a sacrificial pawn. I am afraid the US will take its eye off the ball. Charles Jenkins is a traitor who, assumably, offered countless insider knowledge to the North Koreans. Bobby Fischer is played chess in a war zone. Let’s see, who is more criminal and harmed the US more?

Bobby Fischer's Next Move... Fischer...has appealed to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to help him renounce U.S. citizenship...

Sounds like a variation of the Nimzo [West] Indian defense to me, so I'm guessing his next move will be pawn to king's knight 4 to protect his flank.

I love the way the press says "allegedly".

Even Fisher doesn't claim he wasn't traveling on a revoked passport. He just says he didn't know it was revoked (which is highly unlikely). Last time I checked, not knowing you were doing something illegal is not a defense.

Allegedly , yass ...One could get caught by the police bloody red handed jabbing a knife into someone's heart while screaming " die you SOB , die ! " and the media would still use the " a " word . This country is full of mysteries ...

this is ludicrous. I am an American citizen living in China as my wife is Chinese. To be honest, there is little difference between life here in Shanghai and my home in Cincinnati. Americans can travel to Vietnam, China, and other communist countries., BUT NOT CUBA? REDICULOUS! AMERICA IS A FREE COUNTRY AND HUMANS HAVE A RIGHT TO FREE TRAVEL! Up until a couple years ago, Americans could not travel to VietNam, now we can. Cuba is no threat to the USA. China may be someday in the not so distant future. The USA did not even recognize China until the late 1970's. So why can American travel to China but not Cuba? I have been to North Korea. Why? Maybe part of it was because I was not supposed to, but mostly I wanted to see the country first hand with my wife. I detest the form of govenment there. The Korean situation is the result of the USA and USSR splitting Korea after WWII. If I was Kim Kong Il, I may be doing exactly the same as he is. America needs to be free 'again.' Chinese citizens can travel to ANY nation on Earth. Even Taiwan, if you are familiar with that situation.

Poor Bobby. I pray for him. All this because he followed his passion, chess. If I was so involved in Chess, being the World Champ, I would have done the same.

NOW, if he posed a security threat to the USA, then thats different.

LET AMERICANS TRAVEL WHERE THEY WANT TO!

"The Korean situation is the result of the USA and USSR splitting Korea after WWII. If I was Kim Kong Il, I may be doing exactly the same as he is."

This has to be the dumbest thing I think I have EVER read.

How-in-the-hell do you justify keeping hundereds of thousands of people in concentration camps, even little children who are guilty of no crime other than living in the same house where a Bible was found?

I mean, what kind of blinkered psychopath goes on vacation on North freaking Korea?!

I'm sorry, but you are either the most callous SOB to hail from our fine nation, or you are just making stuff up and have NO idea what you are talking about.

For the sake of your humanity I pray it's the latter.

I guess what I SHOULD have stated was I would have done the same as him as far as his military and nukes. Who gives the USA the right to say who and who cannot have nukes? The USA should not be the world cops, but I do support Bush in the Iraqi war, and I always vote Republican. DPRK is a beautiful country, near pristine wilderness, and the people are very nice. Should Korea reunite? Yes, the south should take over the north, as in Germany. Hell, Kerry admitted to war crimes in Viet Nam. Its 1AM here, so I gotta crash out...

I am no blinkered psycopath. I was near the border with my wife, and we decided to take a weekend vacation there.

I am not making anything up. Stop the name calling...it is againt freerepublic rules. Argue on the merits alone.

I'm sorry if I went overboard on the reply, but this is an issue near and dear to my heart.

www.freenorthkorea.net

The author is a bit of a kooky liberal type, but he's got a bunch of useful links.

Please, don't give those people another dime. Once you know just a little about what goes on in NK, you will understand why they don't need the power to wipe out SK, Japanes, or US cities.

It's ok, I did not clarify myself. The USA isolated Cuba, since they took over USA owned companies... While I do not agree with communism (I hope my internet here in China is not being monitored now) it is not for the USA to dictate what form of govenment other nations should have. I know some in the USA who will not buy anything from China. I opened the freenorthkorea website, and was surpised it was not blocked. (The govenement in China blocks many websites). I did not have time to look it over in detail, I will, but I was curious as to if they blocked it. I know about what goes on in the DPRK and I dont like it...we spent under $5 in the couple days we were there, food is cheaper there than in China......Since I live in Asia, I really like to learn about the nations here...

Well, I always thought we were grouchy at the Cubans on account of that little incident with the missiles...

Yeah, but they needed the cash from the USSR, and we did have missles in Turkey aimed at the USSR. My wife received notification today for her visa interview at the US Embassy...finally, 2 years of waiting!
