I drove a bug once and it was the worst car I have ever been in. I do see how your experience bonded you to it.

my girlfriend even threatened to leave if I sold it.

I hope there isn't an ounce of truth to that.

I'll admit that the bug has a love it or hate it opinion with most folks. Mine got me out of a lot of jams, was exceptionally reliable and great if you were on a tight budget.Parts availability is phenominal as there were just so many produced. As it was built on the same general platform as the early porsches, it handled well and traction was never something you worried about. If you live in an area that got a good amount of snow, that car was the first choice when the weather got foul unless you had something with 4WD or positraction. Since it was so cheap, you didn't care too much if you abused it, you could always pick up another good running example for a few hundred bucks (but that was in the 60's).

It makes sense - it was rather hard, (though not impossible) for a girl to get pregnant in a VW bug.
